Happenings / News / Press CoveragePress Coverage ABB and Deutsche Telekom to develop smart grid solutions Smart grid solutions in Friedrichshafen to help integrate renewable energy, improve efficiency
Zurich, Switzerland, April 14, 2010 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, and T-Systems, a Deutsche Telekom subsidiary specializing in information and communications technology, will work together to develop smart grid solutions in the southern German city of Friedrichshafen. The two companies will work closely with the regional power utility Technische Werke Friedrichshafen (TWF) to improve the management of electricity supplies, so consumers can use electricity more efficiently. Deutsche Telekom is investing millions of euros to upgrade Friedrichshafen's fixed and mobile communications infrastructure as part of the T-City program to create ”the city of the future.”
“ABB is fully committed to the further development of the smart grid. We cooperate with partners in a large number of pilot projects. ABB and Deutsche Telekom's intelligent power network expertise are a good fit and we are very happy to join our forces for a major showcase in Germany”, said Brice Koch, Head of Marketing and Customer Solutions at ABB.
Reinhard Clemens, CEO of T-Systems added: "Electricity and data networks are merging. We have both the necessary fixed and mobile broadband communications networks and the experience in managing mass data."
Smart grids are necessary to integrate renewable energy into the power supply system and improve the system's energy efficiency. Germany's share of renewable power is expected to rise to as much as 30 percent in the next decade. For the power system to operate reliably with so much renewable power, consumption will need to accurately match the fluctuating levels of power generation.
Using data networks in real time, smart grids can deliver information required for intelligent automated control of power systems. This enables power utilities to balance power generation and demand. Smart meters can deliver consumption data at shorter intervals, so consumers can better control their power use and take advantage of cheaper electricity prices outside peak-demand periods.
Deutsche Telekom is one of the world's leading integrated telecommunications companies, with more than 151 million mobile communications network customers, more than 38 million land line and more than 15 million broadband service connections (as of December 31, 2009).
T-Systems uses its global infrastructure of computer centers and networks to operate information and communications technology for multinational corporations and public institutions. As Deutsche Telekom's business unit for major corporate clients, the entity offers integrated solutions for tomorrow's networking of business and society. ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 117,000 people.
