Biodiesel is a domestically produced, renewable fuel that can be manufactured from vegetable oils (both edible and non edible) and animal fats. Jatropha Curcas, a plant that grows in almost all the parts of country and that has a potential to rehabilitate degraded or dry lands, is a preferred material for producing bio diesel . Bio diesel is produced by transesterification of oil obtains from the plant.

Blend of 20% biodiesel with 80% petroleum diesel (B20) can be used in unmodified diesel engines. Also, the existing storage facilities and infrastructure for petro-diesel can be used for bio diesel also (with minor alterations). From environment and emissions point of view as well, it is superior to petro-diesel. Hence, the increasing popularity and application of bio diesel as "a desired fuel"is inevitable.
