Satin labels have a smooth feel and appearance, and are often used to enhance the presentation of high quality garments. The satin looms have twice as many warp threads per centimetre as taffeta and, this in combination with the satin weaves used, gives the fine, lustrous appearance. The classic satin quality is often used for prestige 'flagship' labels. The ground colour is limited to the colour of the warp.

As the name implies, the back of the normal satin weave is employed to give more opportunities for ground colours. Because the weft is emphasized, the satin sheen is lost, but the colour and firmness makes reverse satins very attractive. Some designs feature sections of satin and reverse satin and the matt/shiny contrast can be very effective. Such combinations may also be used to create unique textured effects such as marbled ground or even shadow text backgrounds.

A wide array of effects can be invoked by the use of weave textures. These often complement the fabrics used in the garment, for example, Herringbone Twills, Gross Grain and ribbed effects. Others may be graphic such as Marble or floral effects.

Very similar characteristics to Taffeta ground but a diagonal pattern is often seen in the ground weave. By using a twill (diagonal weave) we can emphasize either the ground weft or the warp to affect the colour. Because twill weaves are not as tightly interlaced as Taffeta, it is normal to increase the weaving density to maintain firmness. This has the added benefit of slightly increased definition of the design details.

This type of label is made using a Taffeta loom setup but with double weaving density. The weave structure brings a great deal of ground weft to the surface, resulting in very strong colour saturation. Because of the very high density of weaving, the design definition is generally very high although very small text and other intricate work will tend to be distorted. In summary, this is a more expensive product which is ideally suited to bold colourful designs.

Taffeta, or Plain Weave, is the tightest weave structure possible and therefore has stability and durability, even at relatively low thread density. This makes Taffeta very economical for basic labelling. For the designer the Taffeta ground provides a versatile base for many brocade weave effects which can be combined to create elaborate pictorial effects. Sometimes the Taffeta ground is completely covered by a figure colour. This 'panel' gives strong background colours and makes the label and badge more substantial.
