The residue from oil extraction—roughly 75% of the pongamia seed by weight—can serve as a good substitute for chemical fertilizer. Being nitrogen fixing tree legume, the seed cake is utilized in improving soil fertility. It has been shown that the seed cake has nitrification inhibition properties.
The N: P: K content of pongamia oilcake is better than farmyard manure. Seed cake left over after oil extraction has been used as ‘green manure’ as it is rich in protein and nitrogen. Pongamia cake increases yields by at least 25% when compared with farmer’s practices. However, the optimum solution is a 50:50 mix of pongamia cake and inorganic fertilizer.
