India's strong economic growth has boosted the market for air travel. Flying has become more affordable in India, where the number of people traveling by air in a year is nearly equal to the number of people traveling by train on a day. India recorded a 25% growth in air passenger traffic in last year alone. There are six to seven million air passengers in the country, and industry watchers say their numbers could easily rise nearly tenfold in five years.
With liberalisation in aviation sector and boomin air travel, India has emerged as the leader in Asian aviation market. India along with China has taken the world air travel by storm. HYDERABAD: Getting a commercial pilot's licence has become an expensive proposition. Flying schools in the city have hiked their course fee by at least Rs 50,000 since last year.
The schools attribute the hike to the rise in the price of white fuel that aircraft use but they are also eager to cash in on the demand for their courses, fuelled by the pilot shortage in the country. According to some flying schools, the number of CPL aspirants has gone up four times in the past two years. Similarly, the price of white petrol has gone up four times in the last four years.
CHINESE airlines are rushing to recruit qualified European pilots to counter a potential shortfall of 8,000 pilots over the next ten years. The challenge to European airlines is also coming from India as it scrambles to lure captains from the West.
