Khambhat (Cambay), located in Western India, is known to be the Birth Place of Agate for over 1000 years and is one of the largest agate and semi-precious stones producers in India. The historical records testify that Baba Ghor, a merchant from Ethiopia who led a large contingent of Muslims to settle in the area, introduced the agate mining and cutting industries in Khambhat region in 1500AD. Since then, it has remained one of the major hubs of trading and manufacturing agate and precious or semiprecious gemstones.
