All optical whitening agents are dyes that absorb light in the ultraviolet and violet region (usually 340-370nm) of the electromagnetic spectrum and re-emit light in the blue region (typically 420-470nm). Our range of whiteners is fabricated using fluorescent activity which has a rapid emission reaction. Using these additives enhances the appearance of color of paper or fabric, resulting in a supposed whitening effect. This method increases the general quantity of blue light reflected, making the material appear less yellow.
Fluorescent dyes such as umbelliferone and stilbenes are the most familiar chemicals having the whitening property. They attract energy in the UV fraction of the spectrum and re-emit it in the blue fraction of the visible spectrum. After being treated with an optical whitener, a white surface appears whiter as it discharges additional visible light than shines on it. The yellow and brown tones of the material are hided by the blue light released by the whitener, making the material appear whiter.
