ASTM A 380  calls for cleaning and descaling of SS parts and equipments and vessels/tanks & ASTM A 967 calls for Passivation of Stainless Steel for the following purposes :

(A) Removal of surface contaminants that may impair the normal corrosion resistance of stainless steels- Grade:  304, 304L, 316, 316L.
(B) Removal of iron particles from SS
(C) Removal of oxide scales and rust from SS
(D) Removal of grease, o residual chemical films, soils, particles, metal chips, dirt or other non-volatile deposits.
(E) Formation of protective passive layer on the SS surface.

The presence of the above contaminants on SS equipments may adversely affect the metallurgical or sanitary condition or stability of a surface, or contaminate a process fluid.
