Cold forming is a technique used to speed up the manufacturing process. This technique relies on metal flow due to applied pressure, and during the process of cold forming a wire is fed into the forming machine. Further, it is cropped to length and further shaped either in a single heading station or progressively in each subsequent heading station. Subsequently, the load during the cold forming process must be below the tensile strength, but above the yield strength of the material.
 
Under cold forming, the mechanical properties of the absolute component are directly influenced by the metallurgical properties of the raw material. Therefore, the selection of the raw material for cold formed components is chosen with utmost care.
