Aurolab, an ISO 9001: 2000 certified nonprofit organization started in 1992 is a division of Aravind Eye Care System, dedicated to the eradication of needless blindness worldwide. The mission of Aurolab is to supply high quality ophthalmic products, eye care products at affordable prices to the vision impaired worldwide.

In the early 1990,s IOL surgery was considered to provide a far better benefit to improved vision rather than any existing conventional surgeries and techniques at that point in time. However, the cost of the technology was very exorbitant thereby preventing organizations such as Aravind to provide IOLS free of cost for its patients who could not afford such surgeries. In order to overcome this obstacle and to provide and ensure availability of IOL Surgery to all sections of the society, Aravind in support from other nonprofit organizations pioneered the launch of an IOL manufacturing facility in 1992.

A spate of new launches, development of a varied pipeline, addition of new capacities and product lines, and the expansion of our marketing and regulatory teams have set the tone for robust growth. Our strong portfolio of businesses, geographies and products gives us an edge in an increasingly competitive global market and allows us to provide affordable medication to people across the world, regardless of geographic and socio-economic barriers.

Today, Aurolab manufactures a wide range of eye care products such as intraocular lenses, suture needles, pharmaceutical products, surgical adjuncts, disposable blades and custom made kits for cataract surgery. Distributed in more than 120 countries worldwide.


Intraocular Lens Division
Started in 1992, the IOL division was started with technology transfer from the USA. Aurolab played the role of a price catalyst in the IOL market. Back in 1990’s when the price of IOL’s were around $ 25- $ 30, Aurolab came with a quality product priced at $ 10 thereby forcing other players in the market to reduce their price. Pharamaceutical Division
Started in 1997, the Pharmaceutical division encompasses addressing the supply of orphan drugs and drugs that are available at an exorbitant cost. The division started with 6 products with assistance from a UK based organization and now has over 50 products in its range. Some of the popular products include:

Suture Needle Division
The suture needles division started in 1998 is a state of the art manufacturing facility using a German technology. Our facility manufactures high quality micro suture needles used in Ophthalmic, hand and cardiac sutures microsurgery with wire diameters starting from 70 Microns. Equipment Division
Started in 2005, our equipment division aims to supply quality and cost effective equipments at affordable cost. Our blade division aims to supply disposable blades of consistent sharpness and quality. Technology advancements are currently in progress to make the process better for a much improved product. Some of our products in these divisions include: 
  • Solid State wet-field bipolar cautery
  • Model Eye Ball- Reti Eye-a plastic retinal film useful to practice photocoagulation and indirect ophthalmocsopy

Quality, Regulatory and Certifications
Being a part of Aravind Eye Care System and dedicated to utmost quality, processes are designed in such a way that our product meets the predefined standards at all stages of production. Employees at all levels are encouraged to contribute to achieve highest quality throughout the processes. We have planned systematic set of activities to ensure that variances in processes are clearly identified, assessed and improved to fulfill the requirements of customers. Some of the certifications we possess are:
  • Schedule M approval for our facility
  • Most of our products are CE certified
  • Most of our products are CMDCAS approved. (Health Canada)
  • Nylon and Silk sutures are certified by USFDA
  • Registration is under progress in 15 more countries which includes China and Brazil
  • ISO 9001:2000 & ISO 13485:2003 certification for IOL and Suture needle division
