Characteristics:

Anti-rotation feature prevents rotation damage to carrier in constant running applications. It consists of solid steel roll-pin across the bearing fork-groove. They are self aligning and accept misaligned loads even where the bearing is tilted away from the engine or transmission centerline. This variable contact design assures a longer life and minimizes noise and vibration. The seal consist of separator and bore liner that excludes contamination and retains grease.

The bearing system is one of most critical & essential component of high speed spindle design. The spindle provide high rotational speed, transmits torque & power to cutting tool,worthy of reasonable loading & life. The bearing type used in Spindle must be conform with these demand. Otherwise spindle will not operate/perform its best. Today, wide variety of high precision bearing available from several manufacturer worldwide. In bearing system of spindle, balls roll between inner & outer steel raceway.

Types of high speed spindles bearing
The type of bearing available for spindles are as follows:
• Angular contact ball bearing: These are the most commonly used bearing today in very high speed spindle designs. Also known as precision ball bearing, they provide precision, load carrying capacity(both axial & radial load carrying capacity)& speed required for metal cutting spindle.
• Roller bearing: The roller bearing, also called cylindrical bearing offer higherload carrying capacity & greater stiffness than angular contact ball bearing. They are applicable in spindle with specific rpm requirements & applications.
• Tapered roller bearing: These bearing are used, because of their higher load capacity & greater stiffness over ball bearing. But they do not allow high speeds required by many spindle.

Characteristics of spindle bearing
• Axial load supported in one direction only.
• Necessary of adjustment against second bearing.
• Compared to deep groove ball bearing, spindle bearing have extended ball complement.
• High rigidity & loading capacity.

Bearing Construction: Hybrid ceramic
The ball bearing affect vibration level, temperature & spindle's life & this dependent on materials used in making of ball bearing However, most popularly used ball bearing are hybrid ceramic as they offer distinct advantages over typical steel ball bearing.
• Less mass: The hybrid ceramic balls have 60%less mass than steel balls. This becomes important because as ball bearing operate, centrifugal forces push balls to outer race, & can deform shape of ball which leads to rapid wear & bearing.deterioration. Ceramic balls because of less mass will not be affected even at same speed. Moreover, the use of ceramic balls allow speed to go up 30% for given ball bearing. size, without sacrificing any bearing life.
• Elimination of cold welding: Ceramic ball eliminate cold welding which is major cause of bearing failure. They can do this because they do not react with steel raceway, thereby resulting in longer bearing life.
• Operate at lower temperatures: Because of nearly perfect round shape of ceramic ball, hybrid ceramic bearing operate at lower temperatures compared to steel ball bearing, which results in longer life for bearing lubricant.
• Lower vibration levels: Spindles with ceramic bearing have higher rigidity & higher natural frequencies, which makes them less sensitive to vibration.

Lubrication of bearings
For proper functioning of spindle, proper lubrication of bearing is very essential.
To keep bearing properly lubricated, machine tool manufacturer use several systems like oil-mist,oil-air,oil-jet,pulsed oil-air etc. Such system become necessary if bearing spindle speed are more than 18,000rpm. These lubrication systems must be thoroughly monitored so that ratio & amount of oil & air/mist are correct. Permanent lubricated bearing are best option for keeping replacement cost lower & maintenance cost down.
Lubrication help to form microscopic film between rolling element & prevent skidding & abrasion. Besides that lubrication in spindles protects surfaces from corrosion, & protects area from particle contamination.

Adapter Sleeve


Adapter Sleeve

Adapters are used for installation of bearings with tapered bore on cylindrical shafts. Withdrawal sleeves are also used to install and disassemble bearings with tapered bore onto and off of cylindrical shafts. In disassembling the bearing from the shaft, the nut is pressed down against the edge of the inner ring utilizing the bolt provided on the withdrawal sleeve, and then the sleeve is drawn away from the bearing's inner diameter surface. (Precision of adapter and withdrawal sleeve are stipulated JIS B 1552 and JIS B 1556).


For bearings with a bore diameter of 200 mm or more, high pressure oil (hydraulic) type adapters and withdrawal sleeves have been standardized to make installation and disassembly easier. As shown in the diagram construction is designed to reduce friction by injecting high pressure oil between the surfaces of the adapter sleeve and bearing inner bore by means of a pressure fitting.

If the oil supply inlet is attached in the nut side of the adapter, the supplementary suffix "HF" should be added to the bearing number; if the oil supply inlet is attached on the opposite side, the suffix "HB" should be added to the bearing number. For adapter sleeves, the supplementary suffix "H" is added to the bearing's number in both cases.

The hydraulic sleeve nut is equipped with holes for bolts used for mounting and dismounting and holes for hydraulic piping. The suffix SP or SPB is added to the bearing number of the nut.
