The alumina spheres and cylinders are available with densities between 3.7 and 3.8 g.cm-3 and an alumina content of 95-99%. The equivalently sized zirconia grinding media have a density of 5.5 g.cm-3 and so will generally mill twice as fast as the alumina. In addition, their surface is hard, non-porous and chip resistant, resulting in half the media weight loss and one third the wear to the grinding jar of the alumina media.
