Blind rivets have been in use for numerous years as one of the easiest and most cost effective methods of joining in general applications. The rivet user is free from various concerns, such as about joint design, about space for holding tools, secondly parts (nuts), anti-rotation problems, tool clearances and many more. These rivets are named 'blind', as they can be installed from one side only.

Parts of Blind Rivets:

The rivets assembly comprises of 2 parts:

• Rivet body, called an 'eyelet'

• Mandrel or 'nail' gripped by the jaws of the setting tool

The mandrel is drawn into the body of rivet, which is expanded & drawn into a tight clinch against the back side (the blind side) of work piece. When the assembly is tight enough, the mandrel breaks off at a predetermined tension and falls away. This results in a strong and vibration proof fastening.

Tooling of Blind Rivets:

Riveting is an extremely simple process, hence tooling can be designed to fit the application rather than making the design fit the tooling as today's most bolted and other kinds of joints require. Special nose pieces fit narrow spaces, deep holes & crevices and even right angle applications. The cost of basic tool varies from $25 for a hand tool to several hundreds for specific configurations. The maintenance cost on rivet guns is much less in comparison to conventional tooling used for fastening. The installation tools may be manual, electric, air or hydraulic driving.

The blind rivets are preferred owing to offering large number of benefits, which are mentioned below:

Enhanced Product Design:

The blind rivets are installed from one side only, hence the requirement for access to both sides of work is eliminated. apart from this, these rivets do not require space for tooling clearance, holding tools and 'back side' fixture.

Improved Designing Strength:

The blind rivets contain a single, drilled or punched hole, filled effectively by an expandable and high shear strength, thereby offer a great enhancement in part design strength over screw/bold with u-nut designs. The u-nut designs require cutouts for nut installation and much larger screw holes for alignment & clearance. Where u-nuts are used near edges, the location of large clearance hole is often inconvenient to best design and may even cause a stress in some cases.

Rapid Assembly:

Blind riveting is faster in comparison to other joining methods. Automatic feeding can deliver and set about 50 rivets per minute. Automatic multiple set systems are used in some areas to set as many as 20 rivets at a time.

Efficient Fastening of Dissimilar Material:

The controlled expansion of rivets provides uniform compression, which allows different types of dissimilar material to be perfectly joined. A few of the possibilities includes metal to plastic, plastic to plastic, glass to metal, paper to metal etc. A variety of design features of some rivets allow for maximum load spreading for joining even the softest of material.

Pressure & Leakage Joining:

Rivets expand when set filling & plugging holes from intrusion of water, fumes, etc. Applications are common all over the industry with floor pan drain holes, air conditioning ducts and engine compartment usages being the more common location for rivet plugging.

Vibration Proof:

Unlike to screws and bolts, rivets do not loosen, shake out or back-off. As they fill the hole completely and tightly, hence there is no possibility of side to side slippage loosening. Locking devices, thread adhesives & lock washers are also unnecessary.

Over comes Mismatches:

Rivets can be selected to overcome poor hole alignment & oversize holes. As they hold by expansion inside the hole, irregularities can be compensated during the installation. It is noteworthy that all types of rivets are not capable of filling over sized holes and they require some control of hole dimensions for appropriate fitting.

The application of blind rivets is also cost effective in comparison to other joining methods. The blind rivets offer following cost savings:

Lower Inventory Cost:

As rivets are single item attachment parts and have wide grip ranges, therefore they provide significant inventory cost savings. Different lengths of screws, grip range limitations on u-nuts, throat depths on u-nuts, washer & non-washer configuration of bolts etc, all these add up to large part inventories. On the other hand, higher volumes of fewer parts add up to dollars saved in not only piece part savings but also in warehousing, labor, handling & assembly line costs for stocking, purchasing etc.

Lower Piece Part Cost:

During a research, it was noticed that there is a considerable piece part savings when using rivets over other combination. The price for a standard usage, high volume blind rivet averaged 0.6 cents each. while, the cost of the highest usage (hence cheapest) u-nut was approximately 0.8 cents each, which when added to a standard screw of 1 cent each, was a bit of an increase. While considering that corrosion requirements may demand some special coating for screw & u-nut, which cost about 3-4 cents each, the price question is not worth addressing.

Lower Installation Cost:

Installation, maintenance costs and labor savings of rivets are cheaper “In place” attachments. A cost comparison done showed a differential of 2 cents per joint for using a screw & u-nut over blind rivets.
