Indication: Albendazole is effective in the treatment of single and mixed intestinal nematode infestations such as ascariasis, enterobiasis, ancylostomiasis and trichuriasis. It is also used in treatment of tapeworm infections like taenia saginata (beef tape worm), taenia solium (pork tape worm) and hymenolepis nana (dwarf tape worm). Albendazole is also used in the treatment of echinococcus granulosus (Hydatid cyst), neurocysticerosis filariasis, cutaneous larva mirgrans, toxocariasis trichinosis and giardiasis.
Dosage: For the treatment of taeniasis with ascariasis, hookworm infestation or trichuriasis, the usual dosage for adults and children above 2 years is 400 mg as single dose. In strongyloidiasis, 800 mg is given daily for 3 consecutive days. This may be repeated after 3 weeks. A similar schedule is used for taeniasis when mixed with other worm infestation. In enterobiasis, in children aged 2 years or more, a single dose of 100 mg repeated after 7 days and in adults, a single dose of 400 mg repeated after 7 days is used. If eggs or larvae are found in the stools after 3 weeks, then a second course is recommended. In hydatid cyst, the usual dosage is 400 mg twice daily for 28-day cycles with an interval of one week between cycles. The number of cycles varies from 1-12, though 3 are sufficient in most cases. In giardiasis, the recommended dose is adults and children above 2 years - I tablet daily for 5 days. Children below 2 years - tablet daily for 5 days. Dosage: The usual dose of Meftal-500 for adults is one tablet thrice a day. The duration of treatment varies with the indication and severity of pain for example, 1-2 days in case of dental pain and migraine, 7-14 days in case of acute musculo-skeletal disorders, and several weeks in case of osteoarthritis.
