About UsThe history of the Exchange dates back into the pre-independence era. The genesis of the Exchange in the form of METAL EXCHANGE ASSOCIATION. This fledging organization was nurtured under the dynamic leadership and able guidance of its founder President, the late Sheikh Gulamally Shamshuddin Tambawala, a man of tremendous vision and wisdom. He was ably assisted and supported by his colleagues late Shri Ambalal G. Parekh and late Shri Gordhandas Jethalal Shah, both Hon. Joint Secretaries. Starting with a modest membership of just 8 members, the Exchange grew from strength to strength, evolving into dynamic organization of today which has all along strived for the promotion of non-ferrous metals trade and industry and trade in the country.
During the Second World War, country witnessed severe import restrictions and distribution controls all around and this extended to the field of non-ferrous metals also. But the post-war period gave an impetus to non-ferrous metals industries the world over, India being no exception. After independence, the country experience a brief spell of liberalized import which provided welcome opportunities for indigenous trade and industry to consolidate its position and explore new avenues for growth. The preceding boom in non-ferrous metals trade increased the responsibilities and activities of the Metal Exchange Association, thus furthering its horizons. The Exchange entered into new era in 1946 when it was entrusted with responsibilities of distribution of imported as well as locally manufactured non-ferrous metals and semis.
1948 saw the birth of a new venture, The Metals Traders' Association, which took over trading from the Metal Exchange Association enabling importers to conduct hedge trading, as the prices in India fluctuated in response to those in London Metal Exchange.
It was in the year 1955, the most significant event in the history of the Exchange occurred. It was the amalgamation of Metal Exchange Association and Metal Traders' Association. This merger gave rise to BOMBAY METAL EXCHANGE LIMITED. The credit for this alliance goes to Sheth Abdul Huseein Tambawala, Shri Gopaldas Gupta, Shri Abheraj Baldota, Shri Rajkumar Bagri and late Shri Gordhandas Jethalal, who envisioned the importance of the non-ferrous metals trade and industry and the vital role it played in the national economy. Indeed Bombay Metal Exchange Ltd is an embodiment of the coming together of these two, each contributing to the interest and well-being of the other.
Inspite of the constitutional limitation of the Exchange to have members only from Mumbai, Thane & Raigad District, at the time of inception in the year 1955 BME had about 103 members which now commands a strength of around 400 members and from 44 registered brokers it has almost doubled to 89 brokers. |
