Happenings / News / Press CoverageThe sales region of BYD’s new energy vehicles will expand from Shenzhen to the pilot cities like Shanghai, Changchun, Hangzhou and Hefei from the second half of this year. In the past year, BYD sold more than 400 F3DM cars and no more than 100 E6 all-electric taxis in Shenzhen. Despite subsidies as high as 120,000 yuan, the homegrown all-electric cars, with starting prices at around 300,000 yuan, still have little appeal to ordinary consumers.
BYD also reveals its small electric car program aiming to reduce battery costs. The automaker is considering reducing battery costs by reducing its range. The range of a battery car could be 50km, 80km, 100km, 200km, or 300km, and it will cost differently for different ranges. BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu.
BYD Co., a Chinese car and battery maker backed by billionaire investor Warren Buffett, is moving ahead with a share offering meant to raise cash for a major expansion.
BYD said Wednesday in a notice to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that it was beginning price consultations with investors after receiving regulatory approval for the initial public offering on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. The company already has shares traded in Hong Kong.
The company plans to list 79 million shares, or 3.4 percent of its enlarged capital. MidAmerican Energy, a subsidiary of Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, holds a 9.9 percent stake in BYD.
BYD, which branched into auto making after becoming the world's biggest battery maker, has been investing heavily in expanding its vehicle production capacity despite a 33 percent drop in its profit last year. Chinese manufactured BYD recently signed an agreement with the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands to provide some of its all-electric cars to the government as part of an electric vehicle test program called the 75-EV-RO.
We’ve covered BYD quite a bit in the past, noting the company found support from famous investor Warren Buffet, and first started as a battery manufacturer before turning to cars in 2006. Most recently, we reported on the three hundred electric taxi fleet the automaker is deploying this year in China, as well as the three hundred electric bus fleet. image via City of Rotterdam
BYD’s e6 vehicle, seen in the photo above with Prince Maurits van Oranje, will be part of Rotterdam’s electric vehicle test program, which will be comprised of seventy-five green cars of different types, in a move the government hopes will change citizen’s concerns over the new technology.
