ISO 14001 : 2004 Standard of EMS

ISO14001 :2004 Standardof EMS (Environmental Management System)

The ISO 14000 family addresses various aspects of environmental management. The very first two standards, ISO 14001:2004 and ISO 14004:2004 deal with environmental management systems (EMS). ISO 14001:2004 provides the requirements for an EMS and ISO 14004:2004 gives general EMS guidelines.

The other standards and guidelines in the family address specific environmental aspects, including: labeling, performance evaluation, life cycle analysis, communication and auditing.

An EMS meeting the requirements of ISO 14001:2004 is a management tool enabling an organization of any size or type to:

  • identify and control the environmental impact of its activities, products or services, and to
  • improve its environmental performance continually, and to
  • implement a systematic approach to setting environmental objectives and targets, to achieving these and to demonstrating that they have been achieved.

How it works?

ISO 14001:2004 does not specify levels of environmental performance. If it specified levels of environmental performance, they would have to be specific to each business activity and this would require a specific EMS standard for each business. That is not the intention.

ISO has many other standards dealing with specific environmental issues. The intention of ISO 14001:2004 is to provide a framework for a holistic, strategic approach to the organization's environmental policy, plans and actions.

ISO 14001:2004 gives the generic requirements for an environmental management system. The underlying philosophy is that whatever the organization's activity, the requirements of an effective EMS are the same. This has the effect of establishing a common reference for communicating about environmental management issues between organizations and their customers, regulators, the public and other stakeholders.

Since ISO 14001:2004 does not lay down levels of environmental performance, the standard can to be implemented by a wide variety of organizations, whatever their current level of environmental maturity. However, a commitment to compliance with applicable environmental legislation and regulations is required, along with a commitment to continual improvement – for which the EMS provides the framework.

The EMS standards:

ISO 14004:2004 provides guidelines on the elements of an environmental management system and its implementation, and discusses principal issues involved.

ISO 14001:2004 specifies the requirements for such an environmental management system. Fulfilling these requirements demands objective evidence which can be audited to demonstrate that the environmental management system is operating effectively in conformity to the standard.

ISO 18001 : 2007 Standard of OHAS

ISO 18001 : 2007 Standard of OHAS

Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001:2007 is one of the three basic components of Integrated Management System (IMS). This course will enable the participants to undertake effective auditing of Occupational Health & Safety Management System in all types of industrial activities by clearly understanding the requirements of OHSAS 18001. This is a valuable course for the organizations interested in implementing either OHSAS or Integrated Management System (IMS) in their activities. It will enlighten the OH&S auditors for conformance with the national and international accepted norms and regulation related to OHSAS 18001 requirements and specifications.

ISO 18001:2007 Occupational health and safety management systems.  Requirements
specifies requirement for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, to enable an organization to control its OH&S risks and improve its performance.

It does not state specific OH&S performance criteria, nor does it give detailed specifications for the design of a management system.

OHSAS 18001:2007 supersedes OHSAS 18001:1999, but remains current until 2009.

There have been a number of significant changes to the document since the first edition was published in 1999.

The changes reflect the widespread use and experience of the standard in more than 80 countries, and by approximately 16,000 certified organizations

Principal amongst the changes are much greater emphasis on "health" rather than just "safety", and significantly improved alignment to ISO 14001:2004 (to enable organizations to develop "integrated management systems").

ISO 22000 : 2005 Standard Of FSMS

ISO 22000 : 2005 Standard of FSMS (Food Safety Management Systems)
Food reaches consumers via supply chains that may link many different types of organizations and may stretch across multiple borders. One weak link may result in unsafe food that is dangerous to health and if this happens, the hazards to consumers may be serious.

ISO 22000 is therefore designed to allow all types of organizations within the food chain to implement a Food Safety Management System. These include feed producers, primary producers, food manufacturers, transport and storage operators and sub contractors, retail service outlets, producers of equipments, packaging materials, cleaning agents, additives and ingredients.

ISO 22000 will make it easier for organizations to implement HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) system for food hygiene as it incorporates the principles of HACCP. Another benefit of ISO 22000 is that it extends the successful management system approach of ISO 9001:2000 quality management system standard which is widely implemented in all sectors but does not itself specifically address food safety.

ISO 22000 can be implemented on its own, it is designed to be fully compatible with ISO 9001:2000. Companies already certified to ISO 9001 will find it easy to extend their certification to ISO 22000.
