NEWSPoultry farm in Coimbatore develops selenium enriched eggs [11-JUL-09] A poultry farm in Coimbatore has developed selenium-enriched eggs to counter selenium deficiencies.
The eggs are called 'super eggs', which are selenium rich and are capable of curing diseases like arthritis, cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. These diseases have a common root that is less selenium intake.
Considering this a private egg producer near Palladam has developed these peculiar eggs where hens in layer farms are fed with rich organic selenium fodder, which includes fish, maize and 14 other ingredients.
"We have developed a new kind of an egg called as selenium enriched eggs, which we are able to produce by feeding hens which you see behind, with special diet rich in selenium sources now, the selenium enriched egg not only gives (meets) about your daily selenium requirements. Also, it contains a number of other benefits as well," said Balaji, proprietor of A Hi -Tech poultry.
According to a research in Scotland University, scientists have identified around 40 diseases related to selenium deficiency.
These eggs are graded and have printed dates on them so that consumers can come to know, how fresh they are. They are even packed nicely, so that it is convenient for consumers to carry them back home.
The poultry farm has a production capacity of five lakh eggs, which are supplied, to Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. They also plan to export these eggs to Middle East and other European countries.

Eggs in Hindu Wedding feasts [07-SEP-10] Chandran's Poultry Farm has introduced a novel concept to break a long held misconception about eggs. One such long held misconception is that egg is a non vegetarian food. Because of this belief, hindu wedding feasts do not include eggs in the menu. P.K.Balachandran of Chandran's poultry farm has attempted to break this long held misconception by including eggs first in his son Balaji's wedding feast held in Coimbatore. More than 3000 eggs were consumed in a single meal. Encouraged by the overwhelming response, he insisted that eggs should be included in his niece's wedding feast held on 28/08/2010 in Udumalpet. Close to 5000 eggs were consumed in a single meal. Subsequently, his son, Balaji, introduced Chandran's Poultry eggs in his brother-in-law's wedding held in Dindigul on 04/09/2010 & 05/09/2010. More than10,000 eggs were consumed during wedding dinner and breakfast the following day. Infact, the counters were forced to close because they were unable to cater to the demand for eggs. Surprisingly, women and men alike thronged the stalls. People from all walks of life enjoyed the different egg recipes. Both Mr. Balachandran and Balaji were stunned by the response. In these feasts, quotes by Mahatma Gandthi and Osho Rajneesh which proclaimed that eggs are vegetarian were prominantly displayed in english and local languages. (See below) Nutritional values of the eggs were also displayed. Many of the guests appreciated the egg counter idea and many have already made reservations for egg counter in thier family weddings with the cook. This practice of including eggs in hindu wedding menus will go a long way in increasing public confidence about eggs as a vegetarian food and hopefully in the near future hindu families will treat eggs at par with milk. Hindu marriages have been an untapped market for eggs, If all poultry farmers start adopting this practice of introducing eggs in thier family weddings and other functions, people from other walks of life will soon follow and the consumption of eggs will dramatically increase. P.S.: Gandhi & Osho's Quote Gandhi's address to the London Vegetarian Society in 1931 in which he argued that " A layman does not consider milk to be animal food. On the other hand, the layman as a flesh food regards eggs. In reality, they are not. Nowadays, sterile eggs are also produced. The hen is not allowed to see the cock and yet it lays eggs. A sterile egg never develops into a chick. Therefore, he who can take milk should have no objection to taking sterile eggs.” - Mahatma Gandhi "I have found something which should be immediately accepted if any intelligence is left in you, and that is eating eggs which are not fertilized, non-fertilized eggs. They are not living, there is no life. If you leave them they will simply rot and disappear. There is no life in them because the male sperm has not entered into the mother's egg; the mother has grown the egg without the male sperm. It is not alive, so there is no harm in eating it. It is vegetarian." -Osho Rajneesh
