Coir, the organic fibre is a strong cellulose fibre with high lignin content. It has been found out that coir fibre can be used successfully for soil erosion control. Coir fibre is hard and strong with good properties for being spun and woven into matting. Coir geo textiles can be used to protect slopes against erosion and help the natural vegetation to take root. The netting breaks-up run-off from heavy rains and minimize the energy of floating water. It also promotes the growth of new vegetation by absorbing water and preventing the top soil from drying out. Moreover, coir geo textiles have the same power of absorbing solar radiation like soil. The fibre decomposes very slowly and provides good support to slopes for about five years. Coir fibre is extracted from green, natural coconut husk after retting in inflowing, circulated or changed water for a period of minimum 3 months. Either mechanically or manually extracted from the dry husk of matured and ripe coconut after soaking there husks in water, the fibre is reasonably free from moisture and impurities. The requirements of three grades of fibres are as follows:

• Bristle Fibre: Long and stiff not brittle.
• Mattress Fibre: Short and resilient.
• Decorticated Fibre: Mixed long and short fibre.

Sea Grass is a salt marsh grass grown in paddy fields where a flooding of sea water is needed during the crops cycle. Sea Grass reeds are thick and rigid and are non-porous and smooth to the touch. After harvesting, the long reeds are dried and spun into yarns. These yarns are then woven into a variety of designs that produce a smooth broadloom with a long lasting finish.
