Toughened Glass is needed where there is a risk of serious injury from falling into or breaking of glass. It is 5 times stronger than standard glass and when it breaks it shatters into tiny pieces.
It is manufactured by heating up flat glass to a temperature of around 700° C and then blowing air on to its surface, quenching it down swiftly and uniformly. It can be divided into two types depending on the degree of heat treatment; Heat- Strengthened Glass or Tempered Glass.

Laminated Safety Glass tends to resist heavy impacts. PVB Laminated is a safety glass made by a heat and pressure process that laminates two or more sheets of glass with a flexible interlayer between them. Generally this interlayer is .38mm thick, although for auto or extra strength a double interlayer of .76mm thick is used. The safety aspects of this glass result from the PVB layer which prevents the glass disintegrating if broken and also acts as a preventative barrier against penetration.

The Double Glazing works by having two panes of glass held apart by a 'spacer bar' with an 'air gap' between, and then sealed up around the perimeter, hence the name 'sealed unit'. The space in the cavity between two panes of glass in an Insulated Glass Unit.
Sealed units are made of two or more lites of glass separated by a spacer which contains a desiccant to absorb moisture from the air (see drawing right). One or two seals (primary, or primary and secondary) seal the glass to the spacer and keep moisture out of the space between the lites. If the seal fails, the desiccant will be saturated and condensation will appear between the lites, fogging the window
