A Bit of History
The Lush creative team has been working together since the late seventies when we first started to hand-make our own cosmetics. In 1978 we sold our first product to the Body Shop and in 1988 we set up Cosmetics to Go, in Poole, Dorset, by the sea on the south coast of England, where we surprised the bathing public by inventing products such as Bath Bombs, Shampoo Bars and Massage Bars and built a hugely successful, catalogue-based mail order cosmetics company the like of which had never been seen before.
Everyone makes mistakes.
In a series of unfortunate co-incidences, culminating in a disaster, Cosmetics to Go went under and we had to sell what was left of the company. In 1994 we picked ourselves up and started making cosmetics again. After all, it's what we're good at. Our first shop was at 29 High Street, Poole, where it is to this day, and we opened our second in London's King's Road. We were mobbed!! We grew from there.
Today, tomorrow, beyond!
Today we have 580+ shops around the world; We also operate mail order businesses from the UK, Canada, Australia, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Hungary, Germany, Taiwan and the United States. We hand-make our cosmetics in UK, Italy, Canada, South America and Japan, in our own production facilities, so that every product available in our shops or sent to you by mail is as fresh as it can possibly be because fresh products work better and use fewer preservatives. Our aim is to have the youngest, freshest products in the history of cosmetics.
We Believe
We believe in making effective products out of fresh fruit and vegetables, the finest essential oils and safe synthetics, without animal ingredients, and in writing the quantitative ingredient list on the outside.
We also believe in buying only from companies that test for safety without the involvement of animals and in testing our products on humans.
We believe in making our own fresh products by hand, printing our own labels and making our own fragrances. We believe in long candlelit baths, massage and filling the house with perfume. We believe that our products should be good value, that we should make a profit and that the customer is always right.
Handmade
All of these products are made by us, by hand. We do not make anything for anyone else (too busy). Ballistics and Bars are individually hand moulded; the Soaps are hand poured into moulds and hand cut. The fruit is freshly juiced. Bottles are hand filled and labeled with the maker's name. The chocolate is the finest Belgian and has to be hidden until the last moment to ensure that it gets into the Massage Bars!
Fresh
We use preservatives in as few products as possible. Wherever we can, we use clever combinations of ingredients to stabilise the products so that they have a natural shelf life. We clearly mark when our products were made and when they should be used by. We hope you like them so much that you'll use them long before they might start to deteriorate.
