Solar Home Systems are designed to meet the basic requirements of end users in semi-urban, remote areas and places where the conventional supply is erratic.

Solar Home Systems are designed to meet the basic requirements of end users in semi-urban, remote areas and places where the conventional supply is erratic.

The basic requirements are considered to be the Light and fan. To make the system efficient and affordable BALAJI has developed the systems which uses Compact fluorescent lamps as light source and fan operated on Direct current, which can be operated on a Battery. The Light and the fan will form a part of the Solar Home system.

BALAJI had developed five different models to meet various needs and requirements of the end user. The details are placed in the following tables.

Solar Home Systems can be developed to meet specific Customer requirements and the following data is needed for providing a suitable system.

  • Shadow free area available on the ground or roof.
  • Whether conventional supply is available.

Solar Portable Lamps
A Solar Photovoltaic Lantern is a lighting system consisting of lamp, battery and electronics all placed in a suitable housing made of metal, plastic or fiber glass and a PV module.

A Solar Photovoltaic Lantern is a lighting system consisting of lamp, battery and electronics all placed in a suitable housing made of metal, plastic or fiber glass and a PV module. The battery is charged by electricity generated by the PV Module. The lantern is a portable lighting device suitable for either indoor or outdoor lighting covering a full range of 360º.

Lamp (For both 12v & 6v models):
  • The lamp will be of compact fluorescent (CFL) type with a rating of either 5W or 7W.
  • The light output for a 5W lamp is about 230 lumen and for a 7W lamp is about 370 lumen.
  • The lamp works at a frequency of 20 to 35 kHz with pre-heating facility for 4 pin lamp.

PV Module:
  • The wattage range of the PV modules as given in above Models are at 16.40 Volts for 12V Model and 8.2 Volts for 6V Model under standard test conditions (STC).
  • The only maintenance required for the PV module is wiping of dust accumulated on the glass surface once in three months.
Battery:
The battery used in the Portable lanterns is Sealed maintenance free. The energy generated by the PV module is stored in the battery and is available to power the lamp for a predetermined duty cycle.

Accessories:
  • An ON / OFF switch is provided on the lantern for its usage when light is required. A cable of 5 meters long provided for inter-connection between the module and the lantern
  • Two indicators are provided on the Lantern. The green light indicates that the lantern is getting charged and the red light indicates that the battery is discharged completely and requires charging.

Warranty:
The warranty on the PV Module is for a minimum period of 10 years and the lantern (including the battery) warranted for a minimum period of one year, from the date of supply.

Solar Street Lights
Solar Photovoltaic streetlight is a reliable & and efficient standalone system. This system primarily consists of Solar Module(s), Lead Acid battery(s), Luminaries with built-in electronics, mechanical structure for the mounting all the sub-systems and a Cable Kit for inter connections.

Principle of Operation:

The solar module(s) of the system converts sin light into DC power. This DC power is used to charge the Lead Acid battery. During the night time the DC power from the battery is inverted to high frequency AC by the inverter and is fed to the CFL (compact Fluorescent lamp). Dusk to dawn sensing circuit will determine the CFL glowing hours. Charge controller as a part of the electronics will monitor the battery operating conditions and improve the battery performance and life.

Definition:

A stand alone solar photovoltaic street lighting system, comprises of a 11 W / 18 W compact fluorescent lamp, Low maintenance lead acid battery or Maintenance free lead acid battery, PV module(s), Control electronics, Interconnecting wires/cables, Pole, Module(s) mounting hardware, Battery box, instruction and maintenance manual.

The system designed to switch ON the system at dusk, operate throughout the night and switches OFF at dawn, automatically.

Lamp:

The light output from 11 WCFL is about 900 lumens and from 18W CFL is about 1200 lumens.

PV Module:
  1. The wattage range of the PV modules as given in above Model is at 16.40 Volts under standard test conditions (STC).
  2. PV Module ratings: 12V / 80W for 11W Luminary at STC and 12V / 100W for 18W Luminary at STC.

Battery:
  • Low Maintenance or Maintenance free lead acid battery.
  • The battery will have a minimum rating of 12V 80 / 65 Ah (at C/10) discharge rate for 11 W operation and 12V / 120 / 100Ah for 18 W operation.
Electronic Protections:
  • Adequate protection is incorporated under no load conditions e.g. when the lamps are removed and the system is switched ON.
  • The system has protection against battery overcharge and deep discharge conditions.
  • Fuse provided to protect against short circuits.
  • A blocking diode provided as part of the electronics to prevent reverse flow of current through the PV module(s).
  • Full protection against open circuit accidental short circuit and reverse polarity is provided.
Mechanical Components:
  • Galvanized Metallic frame structure fixed on the Pole to hold the SPV Module(s). The frame structure will have provision to adjust its angle of inclination to the horizontal between 0 to 90 deg. So that it can be installed at the specified tilt angle.
  • The pole is of mild steel pipe with a height of 4 meters above the ground level after grounding and final installation. The pole will have the provision to hold the all weatherproof lamp housing.
  • A vented acid proof and corrosion resistant (Galvanized) metallic box for outdoor use provided for housing the battery.
