| Proximity Sensor | | Proximity
sensors are used to detect the presence of nearby objects without any physical
contact. It emits an electromagnetic or electrostatic field, or a beam of
electromagnetic radiation (infrared, for instance), and looks for changes in
the field or return signal. Target is the term used to define the object being
sensed by the sensors. Different targets demand different sensors so a capacitive
or photoelectric sensor is suitable for sensing a plastic target and an
inductive proximity sensor senses metal targets.
The maximum distance that sensors can detect is defined as the "nominal
range" and some sensors can adjust the nominal range or possess means to
report a graduated detection distance. The absence of mechanical parts and lack
of physical contact between sensor and the sensed object provides Proximity
sensors with a high reliability and long functional life.
