An adiabatic batch reactor is a closed system with no input and output streams. This reactor is operated under conditions like adiabatic (Temperature of Reaction Mass keep on changing), perfectly mixed (composition of reaction mixture is uniform throughout), and constant volume (volume of the reaction mixture within the reactor remains constant, there is no appreciable change in the density of reaction mass). This set-up is used to study a catalytic homogeneous reaction under adiabatic condition.

It is of welded steel construction, having an internal diameter of 12 inch x 13.5 inch long (volume 1 cu.ft.) and is made of 5/16 inch thick steel plate. The drum is supported on heavy duty ball bearings on the two ends. It has an opening of 4 inch width along the full length of the drum. An air and water tight cover is provided to close the opening after the specimen has been but inside the drum. The speed of rotation is 28-30 r.p.m. The pug mill has an arrangement for being held in any position. A revolution counter for recording the revolutions of the mill is fixed on the machine. The set-up is designed to demonstrate and stimulate the phenomena of crystallization. This operation involves both heat and mass transfer. Crystallization is the formation of solid particles within a homogeneous phase. Its wide use has a two-fold basis; a crystal formed from an impure solution is itself pure.

The setup consists of an open, jacketed and conical bottom vessel fitted with a low RPM agitator and a heater. Arrangement for Cooling water circulation and flow measurement in jacket is made by using storage type water tank, a pump and a rotameter.

The setup is designed to demonstrate principles of distillation in a Bubble Cap column.

The column is made of Stainless Steel with seven plates for mounting the bubble caps. Each plate is provided with one bubble cap. An electrically heated re-boiler is installed at the bottom of the column. The vapors form the top of column are condensed in the shell and tube type condenser by circulating cooling water supplied by laboratory overhead tank.

The condensate is divided into reflux and distillate by automatic reflux divider and R/D Ratio can be varied. Reflux is fed back to the column and distillate is received in a receiving tank. Apparatus is a motorized unit consisting of a camshaft driven by a variable speed motor. The shaft runs in a double bearing. The free end of the camshaft has a facility to mount the cam easily.

The follower is properly guided in gunmetal bushes and the type of follower can be changed according to the cam under test. Graduated circular protractor is fitted co-axial with the shaft. And a Dial Gauge fitted on the follower shaft is used to note the follower displacement for the angle of cam rotation. A spring is used to provide controlling force to the follower system. Weights on the follower shaft can be adjusted as per the requirement. An arrangement is provided to regulate the speed. The apparatus is very useful- for testing the cam performance for jump phenomenon during operation. On this apparatus the effect of change of inertia forces on jump action of earn-follower during operation can be observed. It is useful for testing various cam & follower pairs. Three cams and three followers will be supplied with the apparatus. Theses are already hardened to reduce the wear.

In an ideal CSTR (i.e. an ideal steady state flow reactor) the contents in reactor. This set-up is used to study a non-catalytic homogeneous second order liquid phase reaction under ambient condition.

The setup consists of three CSTR arranged in series and two feed tanks through which two reactants are fed to the reactor. Rotameters are provided to measure the individual flow of Chemicals. The flow rate can be adjusted by operating the needle valves provided on respective Rotameter. The magnetic drive pump is used for circulation of feed. Reactants from feed tanks enter in the first CSTR and are passed to second CSTR and so on. For analysis samples are collected from different ports provided.

Condensation is a phase change heat transfer process occurring in many industrial applications, such as in steam power plants, refrigeration plants etc. Thus this is one of the important heat transfer process present in mechanical and chemical engineering application. The condensation of vapour on a surface is of two types: 1. Drop wise condensation. 2. Film wise condensation. This set up is designed for finding heat transfer co-efficient of two types of condensation and for visualization of these processes. It consists of a vertical frame. Condensation tubes are fitted inside compact glass cylinder. Steam generator is fitted at the backside of the cylinder. Steam comes directly from generator to cylinder. Two valves are fitted to control flow rate of water in individual tubes. Digital temperature indicator monitors temperatures. Pressure gauge and rotameter can observe steam pressure and cold, water flow rates respectively. A digital temperature controller is provided for controlling the temperature of steam. Water level indicator is provided to safeguard the heater. Condensate is measured by measuring cylinder.

The present set-up is designed to measure the emissivity of test plate. The test plate comprises of a mica heater sandwiched between two circular plates. Black plate is identical with test plate, but its surface is blackened. As all the physical properties, dimension and temperature are equal; heat losses from both plates will be same except radiation loss. Hence the input difference will be due to difference in emissivity. Both plates are supported on individual brackets in a wooden enclosure with one side glass to ensure steady atmospheric conditions. Francis Turbine is a reaction turbine, which was developed by an English born American Engineer Sir J. B. Francis. The water enters the turbine through the outer periphery of the runner in the radial direction and leaves the runner in axial direction and hence it is called a mixed flow turbine. As the water flows to the runner, a part of pressure energy goes on changing into kinetic energy. Thus the water through the runner is under pressure. The runner is completely enclosed in a air tight casing and the casing & runner is always full of water.

The present set-up consists of a runner. The water is fed to the turbine by Means of Centrifugal Pump, radially to the runner. The runner is directly mounted on one end of a central SS shaft and other end is connected to a brake arrangement.

The circular window of the turbine casing is provided with a transparent acrylic sheet for observation of flow on to the runner. Load is applied to the turbine with the help of brake arrangement so that the efficiency of the turbine can be calculated. A draft tube is fitted on the outlet of the turbine. The set-up is complete with guide mechanism.

It is a super-conducting device and involves the transfer of heat by boiling and condensation of a fluid and hence transfer of heat takes place under nearly isothermal condition. In this apparatus the comparison of heat pipe with the copper pipe as good conductor of heat and with the stainless steel pipe as same material of construction is made. It consists of three identical cylindrical conductors in respect of geometry. One end of these is heated electrically while there are small capacity tanks acting as heat sinks at the other end. The unit consists of a heat pipe a copper pipe and a stainless steel pipe. Temperature sensors are embedded along the length to measure the temperature distribution and the heat transfer rate is noted in terms of the temperature rise in the heat sink tanks.

The performance of the heat pipe as a super-conducting device can be studied well in terms of the temperature distribution along the length at a given instant and can be compared with other two members. Nearly isothermal temperature distribution and fast rise of temperature in heat sink tank reveals the heat pipe superiority over the conventional conductors

In most industrial processes including reactors, heat is to be added or extracted to control the process. The addition and removal of heat is done by passing steam in jacket fitted to the outside of the vessel or passing cold. Water in helical coil inside the vessel. For effective heat transfer and even distribution of heat, the liquid inside is continuously agitated. The present set-up offers us. A comparative study of Jacket & Helical coil, which can be operated simultaneously. It is a stainless steel jacketed vessel inside which, a helical coil of copper is fitted. A variable speed stirrer is fitted in vessel. The system is such designed that either steam or water is allowed to enter inside anyone of the jacket and helical coil by an arrangement of control valves. Variation in temperature of inside water is measured and is noted. Set-up is fitted with steam traps for condensate collection.

Flow rate of water can be controlled and measured using valve and Rotameter. Temperature of inlet and outlet of both hot & cold fluids are measured by temperature sensors.

The setup consists of a brass tube fitted in a rectangular duct in a vertical fashion. The duct is open at the top and bottom, and forms an enclosure and serves the purpose of undisturbed surrounding. One side of the duct is fitted with a transparent good quality Acrylic window for visualization. An electric heating element is kept in the vertical tube that in turns heats the tube surface. The heat is lost from the tube to the surrounding air by natural convection. The temperature of the vertical tube is measure by Temperature Sensors and displayed by a Digital Temperature Indicator with multi-channel switch. The heat input to the heater is measured by a Digital Ammeter and a Digital Voltmeter and is varied by a variac. The tube surface is polished to minimize the radiation losses.

The setup is designed to study the Hydraulic Ram.

Hydraulic Ram is used for pump little quantity of water to high head from a large quantity of water available at low head. It works on a principle of water hammer stating that “when flowing water is suddenly stopped in a long pipe a pressure wave travels along the pipe creating an effect of water hammer”.

Set up consists of a pipe section fitted with a pulse valve and non-return valve, a supply reservoir on a stand which is connected to an overhead tank, an air vessel above the valve chamber smoothed cyclic fluctuations from the Ram delivery. Different pressure may be applied to the pulse valve to change the closing pressure and hence the operating characteristic.

The flow rate of useful and waste water is measured using measuring tank and stop watch provided. Pressure and Vacuum gauges are connected on delivery and suction side for the purpose of measurement

Both the 2-ton and 3-ton Presses are made with a ratchet mechanism. This allows for comfortable positioning of the lever for the final application of force. The base plate is flat and level to ensure an even and uniform impression in the leather. These presses can also be used for other soft materials. A batch reactor is a closed system with no input and output streams. A batch reactor can operate under conditions like Isothermal (Temperature of Reaction Mass remains constant), perfectly mixed (composition of reaction mixture is uniform throughout), and constant volume (volume of the reaction mixture within the reactor remains constant, there is no appreciable change in the density of reaction mass). This set-up is used to study a non-catalytic homogeneous reaction under isothermal condition.

The set up consists of a Reactor fitted in a constant temperature water bath. One stirrer is fitted for mixing the reactants in reactor and other is fitted in water bath to keep the uniform temperature throughout in the bath. The temperature of bath can be maintained from ambient to 90 C with the help of Digital Temperature indicator Cum Controller. Samples can be taken out with the help of a sampling pipette

In an ideal CSTR (Le. an ideal steady state flow reactor) the contents in reactor are well mixed and have uniform composition throughout. Thus the exit stream has the same composition as the fluid within the reactor. This type of reactor is known as mixed flow reactor. This set-up is used to study a non-catalytic homogeneous second order liquid phase reaction under isothermal condition.

The set up consists of two feed tanks through which two reactants are fed to the reactor. Rotameters are provided to measure the individual flow of Chemicals. The flow rate can be adjusted by operating the needle valves provided on respective Rotameter. The magnetic drive pump is used for circulation of feed. The CSTR is fitted with stirrer for proper mixing. From top outlet of it samples are collected for analysis. Constant temperature water bath arrangement is provided to conduct the experiment at various temperatures.

Kaplan Turbine is an axial flow reaction turbine named in honour of Dr. B. Kaplan, a Gennan Engineer.

This turbine is suitable for low head. The power produced by a turbine is proportional to QH. As the head (H) decreases the J discharge (Q) must increase to produce the same power. The present set-up consists of a scroll casing housing a runner. Water enters the turbine through the stationary guide vanes and passes through the runner axially. The runner has a hub and airfoil vanes, which are mounted on it.

The water is fed to the turbine by means of Centrifugal Pump. The runner is directly mounted on one end of a central SS shaft and other end is connected to a brake arrangement. A transparent hollow cylinder made of acrylic is fitted in between the draft tube and the casing for observation of flow. Load is applied to the turbine with the help of rope brake arrangement so that the efficiency of the turbine can be calculated. The set-up is supplied with control panel. A draft tube is fitted on the outlet of the turbine.

The set-up is complete with guide mechanism. Pressure and Vacuum gauges are fitted at the inlet and outlet of the turbine to measure the total supply head on the turbine

Evaporation deals with the concentration of a non-volatile Solute from a solution by the removal of required amount of volatile solvent. Usually the solvent is water. By vaporizing a part of the solvent, useful product i.e. the concentrated solution or thick liquor is produced and the Vapour is discarded. Lung tube evaporators are usually used for the concentration of foamy liquids. The set-up is consists of two evaporators fitted in series. Each is made up of Stainless Steel tubes surrounded by a Stainless Steel jacket and fitted with accumulator. Dilute solution is feed to the first evaporator. Steam from. a steam generator is supplied to evaporator to concentrate the dilute feed solution to a desired level. The jacket is fitted with a steam trap and the condensate is collected at the end of trap. The vapours of volatile solvent produced in first evaporator are supplied to the second evaporator. The vapours of volatile solvent are condensed in a shell & tube type condenser and the balance non-volatile solute collected in the accumulator is recycled through the evaporator.

Pelton Wheel Turbine is only impulse water turbine now in common use named in honour of Sir L.A. Pelton (1829- 1908) of California, USA. It is a tangential flow impulse turbine. The water strikes the buckets along the tangent of the runner. The energy available at the inlet of the turbine is only kinetic energy. The pressure at the inlet and outlet of the turbine is atmospheric. This turbine is used for high heads.

The present set-up consists of a runner. The buckets are mounted on the runner. The water is fed to the turbine, through SS nozzle with a SS spear, by means of Centrifugal Pump, tangentially to the runner. Row of water into turbine is regulated by adjusting the spear position by the help of a given hand wheel The runner is directly mounted on one end of a central SS shaft and other end is connected to a brake arrangement. The circular window of the turbine casing is provided with a transparent acrylic sheet for observation of flow on to the buckets. This runner assembly is supported by rigid MS structure. Load is applied to the turbine with the help of this brake dynamometer so that the efficiency of the turbine can be calculated. Pressure gauge is fitted at the inlet of the turbine to measure the total supply head to the turbine

The set-up is designed to demonstrate and stimulate the moisture removal by heat under forced draft action created by hot air stream and shower of moist solid due to rotary action of dryer drum.

The set-up consists of a long cylindrical shell slightly inclined towards the outlet rotating at low RPM. Counter current hot air from blower passes through heating chamber to produce hot air works as the drying agent entered from one side of the rotating shell and leave from other side removes the moisture from the moist solids. High moisture content feed enters from one end of the shell and low moisture content product discharges from the other end of shell. As the shell rotates internal flights lift the solids and shower them down through the interior of the shell. This action increases the contact of wet solid against hot-air making the dryer very effective.

This operation involves both heat and mass transfer. Crystallization is the formation of solid particles within a homogeneous phase. Its wide use has a two-fold basis; a crystal formed from an impure solution is itself pure.

The setup consists of a top open jacketed round bottom trough. A ribbon mixer is provided in crystallizer trough, which rotates at low rpm for agitation of saturated solution. The saturated solution is prepared in a tank fitted with heater and a stirrer. This hot saturated solution is fed at one end of the crystallizer and flows slowly towards the other end while being cooled and is allowed to flow back in hot feed tank making the process continuous. Tool And Cutter Grinder

I bought a very basic tiplap grinder at a machinery auction. As there was no facility for changing the grinding head or indexing the tools i set about modifying it on the lines of the quorn tool and cutter grinder. The wheel head is completely fabricated, using the original motor and a spindle made from the "spindles" book in the nexus special interest books range. The spindle has a myford nose, and the interchangeable grinding heads are held in place by 3/8" myford taper collets and a drawbar. The spindle is driven by a plastic round belt. The workhead has been made mainly from quorn castings and i have added a second bar which, in conjunction with a quorn rocking lever, allows fine control of the amount of tilt on the workhead. This second bar is mounted on screwed "jack" feet to allow it to be adjusted absolutely parallel to the original bar. The rocking lever is mounted on a collar that slides on the main bar and is attached to the workhead as shown below.

The set-up is designed to study Coriolli's Component of Acceleration of a slider crank mechanism. Here the mechanical slider system is replaced by a continuous stream of water flowing through a steady rotating pair of tubes. These tubes can be rotated at various speeds by using a swinging field motor which also acts as dynamometer. A Perspex window on top of the tank gives clear view of the process and prevents splashing of the water over the side of the tank. Drag Co- Efficient (MOT-04)

The apparatus has been designed to introduce students to the fundamental characteristics of the behavior of the particle system, in particulars the relationship between the drag coefficient of falling particles and their Reynolds number value. Particles covering a range of sizes and densities are supplied and the experiments are conducted by allowing single particles to fall through a number of different liquids contained in vertical glass tube. The rate of fall of the particle is determined by timing their passage between two marks on the walls of the glass tubes. Observation of particle movement is aided by the provision of a shielded fluorescent tube light mounted on the backboard. Particles can be removed from the bottom of the tubes without the necessity of draining the liquid. A valve system is provided at the bottom of each tube to allow the particles to be removed with the minimum loss of liquid.

Flow Through Helical Coil (MOT-03)

Helical coils are used for heating or cooling in process tanks. When a fluid flow through a curved tube, centrifugal force acting upon the various elements of fluid moving with different velocities causes secondary circulation. Secondary flow results in higher heat transfer characteristics. Further secondary flow stabilizes the laminar flow leading of a higher critical Reynolds number for transition from laminar to turbulent flow.

In an ideal Plug Flow Reactor {PFTP} there is no mixing in the direction of flow and complete mixing perpendicular to direction of flow. Concentration of reactants varies along the length of reactor but not in radial direction. In case of a coil turbulence is introduced due to frequent change in direction of flow and presence of secondary flow, so a higher value of reaction rate constant is expected in coil tube type plug flow reactor. This set-up is used to study a non-catalytic homogeneous reaction under isothermal condition.

The set up consists of two feed tanks through which two reactants are fed to the reactor. Rotameters are provided to measure the individual flow of Chemicals. It is a helical coil tube type reactor kept in a constant temperature water bath to conduct the experiment at various temperatures. Reactants enter at lower end coming out of the top of coil from where samples are collected for analysis.

An isothermal semi-batch reactor is a semi-closed system with one input stream. It is operated under conditions like Isothermal (Temperature of Reaction Mass remains constant) and perfectly mixed (composition of reaction mixture is uniform throughout).

This set-up is used to study a non-catalytic homogeneous reaction under isothermal condition. The set up consists of a Reactor fitted in a constant temperature water bath. Before starting the reaction the reactor charged with measured quantity of one reactant. From a feed tank another reactant is fed to the reactor. Using a sampling pipette samples can be taken out for analysis after fixed interval. Rotameter is provided to measure the flow of Chemicals. The magnetic drive pump is used for circulation of feed. One stirrer is fitted for mixing the reactants in reactor and other is fitted in water bath to keep the uniform temperature throughout in the bath. Michell Tilting Pad Bearing App (TOM-09)

The apparatus consists of a pad, which can be tilted to the required angle. An endless belt, which moves, beneath the pad, carries the oil over its surface from oil bath. When the pad is tilted over the oil film, pressure is developed, the pad is provided with pressure tapings parallel and perpendicular to belt direction. The pressure distribution is measured over a multi tube manometer. A variable speed motor drives the belt. Evaporation is a process for concentrating a solution by vaporizing part or all of the solvent. In most of the cast s the solvent is water. The Pan Evaporator set-up is designed to study the fundamentals of evaporation process. The set-up consists of a jacketed pan evaporator made of stainless steel and an electrically heated steam generator of suitable capacity. To evaporate the solution in pan, steam is allowed to enter in the jacket using a control valve. Condensate is collected from steam trap for energy measurement. The column is made of Stainless Steel material packed with Borosilicate Glass rasching rings. An electrically heated re-boiler is installed at the bottom of the column. The vapors form the top of column are condensed in the shell and tube type condenser by circulating cooling water and it is supplied by laboratory overhead tank.

The condensate is divided into reflux and distillate by automatic reflux divider and R/D Ratio can be varied. Reflux is fed back to the column and distillate is received in a receiving tank. Plug Flow Reactor (Coiled Tube Type) (CRE-05 )

In an ideal Plug Flow Reactor {PFTP} there is no mixing in the direction of flow and complete mixing perpendicular to direction of flow. Concentration of reactants varies along the length of reactor but not in radial direction. In case of a coil turbulence is introduced due to frequent change in direction of flow and presence of secondary flow, so a higher value of reaction rate constant is expected in coil tube type plug flow reactor. This set-up is used to study a non-catalytic homogeneous reaction under isothermal condition.

The set up consists of two feed tanks through which two reactants are fed to the reactor. Rotameters are provided to measure the individual flow of Chemicals. The flow rate can be adjusted by operating the needle valves provided on respective Rotameter. The magnetic drive pump is used for circulation of feed. It is a helical coil tube type reactor. Single Effect Evaporator (HT-21 )

Evaporation deals with the concentration of a non-volatile solute from a solution by the removal (If requited amount of volatile solvent. Usually the solvent is water. By vaporizing part of the solvent, useful product. i.e. the concentrated solution or thick liquor is produced and the vapour is discarded. Long tube evaporators are usually used for the concentration of foamy liquids. The set-up consists of stainless steel tubes surrounded by a stainless steel jacket and fitted with accumulator. Dilute solution is feed to tubes. Steam from a steam generator is supplied to shell to concentrate the dilute feed solution to a desired level. The jacket is fitted with a steam trap and the condensate is collected at the end of trap. The vapours of volatile solvent are condensed in a shell & tube type condenser and the balance nonvolatile solute collected in the accumulator is recycled through the evaporator.

This apparatus is useful for measurement of power transmitted for various input power conditions with varied belt tension. Belt slip or creep also can be measured. The apparatus consists of a variable speed D.C. Motor, driving pulley and driven pulley of equal diameters. The pulleys are mounted on input shaft (motor shaft) and output shaft. The driven pulley can slide on the base only with bearing block to change the initial tension in belt. Brake drum is mounted on the output shaft, which helps to measure power output. The motor speed is varied by Thyristor Control D.C. Drive. A double channel digital speed indicator indicates driving and driven pulley speeds. With the help of Stroboscope (not in the scope of supply) it is possible to demonstrate the slip of belt on driving and driven pulley.

Solid-Liquid Extraction Bonnoto Type (MT-04)

The setup is designed to demonstrate principles of extraction in a Bonnotto type extraction column. It consists of a SS column, feed tank with heating arrangement, receiving tanks and piping. Rotameter is provided for flow measurement.

The column is divided into multiple stages; each stage consists of a plate and a mechanical agitation section. The circular plates are arranged one above the other in opposite radial opening, yield higher extraction efficiency than conventional packed column.

The solids are introduced at the top through a hopper spread over the top plate and pushed to slot to fall to the next plate below and so on to the bottom of the column. The solvent is introduced near the bottom of the column and it flow upward counter-currently to the solids. A pump supplies the solvent and flow rate is monitored by means of a Rotameter. At the bottom of column a screw conveyor arrangement is done to remove the extracted solids driven by means of an electric motor. Solvent feed tank is kept in a bath fitted with heater. York Scheibels Extraction Column (MT-02 )

The setup is designed to demonstrate principles of extraction and mass transfer operation in a YORK SCHEIBEL'S column.

The set up consists of a glass column, feed tanks, air regulator with pressure gauge, receiving tanks and piping. Rotameter are provided for flow measurement.

The glass column is divided into multiple stages; each stage consists of a woven wire mesh (calming) section and a mechanical agitation section. The agitator speed can be varied by drive. The presence of alternatively agitating and calming sections yield higher extraction efficiency than conventional packed column
