Dr. Walia's Skin and Laser Clinic is being run by Dr. Parmjit Singh Walia. Dr. Walia did his MBBS from Govt. Medical College, Amritsar (Punjab, India) in 1992-97 batch. He completed his MD in Dermatology, Venerology and Leprology in 2001.He started his career by serving the society as Medical Officer Incharge of Aid Awareness Group for truckers at Amritsar (Punjab, India) where he was responsible for making them aware of and treat various sexually transmitted diseases alongwith HIV. During his tenure at AAG (Aids Awareness Group), Dr. Walia developed keen interest in the field of Dermatology and Venerology and joined Guru Nanak Dev Hospital at Amritsar (Punjab,India) as a Resident in the department of dermatology. He worked on various projects for three years in that Department. He has keen interest in the field of Cosmetology and Dermatosurgery.

By installing the ND-Yag laser, he has joined the elite club of Dermatologists in India who have this facility in their clinic which was till now being handled by non Dermatologists in some beauty clinics. Recently we conducted double blind study comparing efficacy of oral gabapentin and topical ketamine cream in postherpetic neuralgia patients. It was funded by Apothecaries India Ltd. for a USA based pharmaceutical company and was concluded in March 2008. Presently, we are doing comparative study of different trends of dermatological practice in rural & urban setup. For this we have chosen Sirhind as rural area and Mohali as the urban area. This study will enroll around 2000 cases (thousand each from rural and urban areas).

How does Hair Removing Laser works?

Hair Removal Laser has been in use since 1997. The US FDA has approved it for permanent hair reduction. Lasers help in curing localized damage by selectively heating black target matter melanin that is responsible for black color of hair, while not affecting rest of the skin. This is the reason for minimal side effects of Laser hair Removal.

ND YAG Laser is best suited for Indian skin. As we Indians have dark colored skin, ND YAG Laser is approved by US FDA to be best for Indian skin.

What areas of the body can be treated with Laser hair Removal?

Hair removing Laser is able to precisely treat all areas of our body that are visible including dark thick black hair. Hair removing by laser is also more effective on light colored skin having dark hair as compared to dark colored skin with light hair.

In Women other than full body, most common areas of treatment are upper lips, side locks, full face, chin, bikini lines, arms and legs, and underarms.

In Men, most common areas for treatment are shoulders, chest & back, the beard area and sometimes ear lobes. It can also be used to give shape to eyebrows.

How many treatments will I need and how will they be spaced?

As every person is different from others, it depends entirely on an individual, but usually maximum results are realized in 4 to 6 sessions. They are usually spaced at 4 to 6 weeks duration above neck and 8 to 9 weeks apart below neck.

How much time one sitting of Laser Hair Removal takes?

It usually takes 5 to 10 minutes for chin. Otherwise it depends upon the areas to be treated.

Does Laser treatment hurt?

No it is a painless treatment. Cold air is used on treatment area during procedures to completely reduce the discomfort.

Are there any side effects after treatment and how long will they last?

ND YAG Laser is approved by US FDA and there are no serious side effects. There might be some degree of redness that usually disappears within few minutes. Very rarely there would be brownish mark which may remain for few days.

What precautions should I take before and after the laser treatment?

Before:

Avoid waxing, threading, plucking 3 weeks before starting with Laser treatment.

After:

It’s preferable to apply sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher and avoid direct sun exposure.

How long do the effects of Laser treatment last?

It depends on hormonal status of the patients as those who have underlying hormonal imbalance keep on getting new growth at regular time intervals if not treated by medicine as laser is capable of removing hair but for regrowth hormonal status has to be corrected.
