JUNE 2010 – EMCO Enterprises cares about the quality of its products and services. It also cares about its quality employees. This philosophy is evidenced by the company’s commitment to providing its employees with a safe workplace. Recently, EMCO earned an award for outstanding achievement in accident prevention from the Iowa-Illinois Safety Council. The award was for 2009, when the company reduced its work-related injuries by 57 percent and improved its safety incident rate by 45 percent. Its safety incident rate, in fact, was 31 percent lower than the industry average for manufacturers such as EMCO. Communication has been the key to EMCO’s success. Dallas Palmer, a site safety specialist at the company’s Des Moines, Iowa, plant, says: “We are doing a much better job of communicating with our employees, involving them in the daily affairs of safety, instead of just focusing on getting the doors out. We all know what needs to get done, we all know what it will take to get there and we are all accepting the responsibility for it.” EMCO was one of more than 170 businesses, industries and government agencies in Illinois and Iowa to receive an award for promoting active safety programs and reducing OSHA-recordable injuries among their employees. To qualify, applicants had to demonstrate an incident rate lower than the national average for their specific industry. The award honored both EMCO plants, including its facility in Luray, Va. Said Dallas: “It was exciting. This is the first time EMCO has won this award.”
