Established in the year 2005, our Emu Farm related activities and associated services are handled by Dr. Yashwant G. Gadgil, M. V. Sc. (Physiology and Medicine). He has with him around 48 years of experience in the field of Livestock Management. Some of the salient highlights of his professional experience include:

Teaching in Livestock Physiology and Medicine at Bombay Veterinary College Parel, Mumbai

Work experience in the department of Animal Husbandry as a ‘Technical Officer’

Worked as ex-coordinator to the Director of Economics and Statistic (DPAP Project Program preparation cell of Govt. of Maharashtra)

Worked as a Program Coordinator in Production of Vaccines in BAIF and HOECHST Pharmaceuticals

Presently, the Emu farming business operations is handled by Mr. Ajit Gadgil, his son. With the background of Agriculture & Engineering, he is also working as Proprietor of Nirmiti Road Markers, an ISO 9001-2000 Company.

Initially starting with rearing of Emu Birds, we are progressing by undertaking activities involving incubation of fertilized eggs to hatch out healthy chicks using modern scientific management activities. We also offer high quality Emu birds to farmers at concession rates along with training & advice in their Scientific Management.

Emu is a large native Australian bird that cannot fly. Similar in appearance to the Ostrich, Emu is of the same family as the African Ostrich and South American Rhea. They have grey-brown feathers, pale-blue neck & face, long powerful legs and three toes. It is also world''s third largest living bird.

Description

An average adult male Emu is:

• Between 1.5-2 meter tall
• Weighs between 35 and 50 kilograms
• Life span of around six years

Facts

Body Stats:

• Height: 1.5 - 2 m Weight: 35 - 50 kg
• Breeding:
• Emus mate when they are about eighteen months old
• Female lays between five & fifteen eggs (weighing up to one kilogram each)

Potential Usage:

• Farmers today are allowed to breed & raise Emus for meat, leather and oil
• Emu oil is used in treatment of muscle & joint pains such as arthritis
• It is also used in cosmetics

The Industry

Emu Industry can be divided in 2 categories:

Emu farming:

Here farmers raise Emu birds for breeding them & then selling the chicks in the market to new farmers or commercial Emu farmers.

Commercial EMU Farming:

In Commercial EMU farming, farmer raises Emu birds till age of 12-15 months and then slaughters them for meat, oil, skin, feathers, toe nails. These products are then processed and marketed to the users. The main objective of commercial Emu farming is to extract oil from fat of the bird, process it & then sell it. The refined Emu oil can be sold for as much as Rs. 5,000 per liter.

• Emu oil comes from thick pad of fat on back of the bird
• The oil is derived from body fat after processing to remove impurities
