For wastewater treatment and reuse, we set up Solid Immobilised Bio-Filter (SIBF) system. The salient features of this treatment system: it is ecofriendly, energy conserving and non-conventional. The treated water conforms to the Pollution Control Board’s norms and can be reused for gardening and toilet flushing.
It is now a known fact that the drinking quality water is becoming a scarce commodity. Moreover, pollution of these limited water sources by sewage is adding to the problem. Therefore, by proper treatment of sewage, not only the pollution problem is solved, but also, by reusing the treated water for gardening, toilet flushing & other non-potable uses, there will be a saving of 40 to 50% on use of drinking quality water. This implies that by installing wastewater treatment system, the reuse of treated water in itself leads to payback of installation cost of treatment system. This will be possible only if a proper treatment system is installed which gives consistent results. Such a system should be based on the following criteria:
Easy to operate
Uses as little mechanisation as possible
Uses less electric power/energy
Generates usable treated effluent consistently.
ABOUT SIBF SYSTEM
The Solid Immobilised Bio-Filter (SIBF)System is the nature’s way of treating wastewater. Unlike conventional treatment process, secondary sludge is not produced in this process, thus, handling of sludge as in other systems is obviated (refer comparison table). The treated water can be reused for various purposes catering to zero-discharge trend. This system has less operational costs since it involves lesser skill and requires electricity only for about 5 – 6 hour pumping.
APPLICATION:
SIBF system are being designed and installed for treating organic (biodegradable) wastewater such as from housing colonies, canteens, hotels, resorts, educational institutes, ashrams, entertainment parks, food-processing industries, fruit processing industries, agro-based industries, animal houses, slaughter houses, etc.
THE BENEFITS OF SIBF ARE:
HUGE SAVING ON ELECTRICITY: There is a huge saving on electricity (i.e. 85% - 90%) while operating the SIBF system as compared to the conventional treatment plant.
HUGE SAVING ON O & M COST: The O & M cost of SIBF system is only about Rs. 3/-per m3 as against Rs. 20/- in case of conventional treatment plant. Thus, there is a saving of about 80% on O & M cost.
CARBON CREDIT: Carbon credits can be availed under CDM for installing ecofriendly and energy saving treatment plant.
SIMPLE TO OPERATE: The SIBF system is very simple to operate.
NO SECONDARY SLUDGE: No secondary sludge is produced in SIBF system. Whereas, in conventional treatment plant, large quantity of this sludge is produced and poses disposal problem.
MEETING POLLUTION BOARD NORMS: The pollution problem is solved. The treated water satisfies the Pollution Control Board norms.
TREATED WATER FOR REUSE: The treated water from the SIBF system can be reused for gardening. There is groundwater recharge too!
AESTHETIC FEATURE: The system has a garden look and appears as a part of landscaping.
