CRITEC LPP Series - Light Pole Protector/AC Power Protection

The LPP series of surge arresters provide an economical means of protecting highway, parking and other outdoor lighting systems. The weatherproof enclosure is designed for installation in the light base chamber. For optimum protection, the LPP unit should be installed in the base of each light pole, while the CRITEC TDX unit should be used to protect the primary electrical panel feeding the lighting distribution system.

    Triggered Spark Gap

    Triggered Spark Gap

    The quest for increasingly robust point-of-entry protection has led to the development of the CRITEC high energy Triggered Spark Gap Technology.

    The TSG provides similar let-through voltages to MOV-based products but with much greater energy handling capability. It also diverts more energy to ground through an enhanced clamping mechanism.

    Traditional spark gaps have high let-through voltages. The TSG has overcome this by sensing the arrival of a transient and generates an initiation spark thus allowing the TSG to trigger on significantly lower voltages, typically less than 1500 volts.

    The TSG has also addressed the problem of follow current control that is associated with traditional spark gaps.

    The TSG has eliminated this problem by lengthening the arc and splitting it into several smaller arcs. This causes the arc to rapidly extinguish, resulting in higher fault current capacities, minimising wear of the spark gap electrodes and preventing the unnecessary activation of upstream fuses or circuit breakers.

    The Compact Surge Reduction Filter

    No need to purchase a short-lived device to get maximum protection for your critical equipment. The robust TSG handles high surge energies, and the True L-C filter and Transient Discriminating Technology stages reduce let-through voltages, providing both features at an affordable price.

    Surges and voltage transients are a major cause of expensive electronic equipment failure and business disruption. Damage may result in the loss of capital outlays, such as computers and communications equipment, as well as consequential loss of revenue and profits due to unscheduled system downtime.

    The Compact 63 Amp series of Surge Reduction Filters  — a CRITEC part within the ERITECH line of Facility Electrical Protection products — offers an economic alternative to the premium TSG-SRF Surge Reduction Filter series. They utilize the same Triggered Spark Gaps to provide high-energy primary surge diversion, but include a more compact filter section. The secondary surge diversion elements are based on the well-received modular technology of the TDS150 that allows individual modules to be easily replaced in the field, if required. Optionally, they are available without the enclosure for direct mounting within an existing electrical panel.

    The Compact 63 Amp series of Surge Reduction Filters find their application where the benefits of the TSG-SRF filters are required, but economic considerations dictate a different solution. The simple construction provides for easy field service.

    The SGD1100 spark gap surge diverter has been specifically designed to provide equipotential bonding between the Neutral and Earth terminals of TT power distribution systems, as per IEC-6036-5-534. Its high surge rating makes it suitable to IEC zones 0A – 1 and VDE classification B locations.

    The SGD112 spark gap surge diverter is a compact modular SPD for applications where the highest surge rating is not required. A visual indicator flag provides user-feedback if the internal thermal disconnect operates. Voltage free contacts remotely signal that maintenance is due.

    CRITEC DDI Series - Decoupling Inductor

    Decoupling inductors are installed between spark gap and MOV protection devices to ensure correct coordination. If less than 10 meters of wiring exists between a spark gap and downstream MOV device, then decoupling inductors should be installed. As the decoupling inductors are installed in series with the load, two units are available, a compact unit for circuits up to 35A and a larger unit for 63A circuits.

    For RF circuit protection the CSP is available with a choice of two nominal clamping voltages. The selection of the CSP unit is based on the peak transmitting power of the communication circuit. From this the peak circuit voltage is calculated and the CSP with the next highest clamping voltage is selected.

    The formula is:

    Vpeak = VSWR x 1.4 x Sqrt(50 x Transmit Power)

    Where VSWR is the Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (use 1.5 if unsure) and Transmit Power is in Watts.

    Krone-LSA Disconnect Block Series

    In communications and computer installations it is not uncommon to install separate grounds for lightning, mains power, computer (quiet ground), and communications (for security, and tempest requirements). Although this may be highly desirable under normal operating conditions, when lightning or other transient voltages occur, differences in ground potentials between the ground electrodes are inevitable and equipment damage is the result.

    The Potential Equalization Clamp (PEC) is an isolation spark gap that prevents these ground potential differences by operating under transient conditions to effectively clamp the grounds together. Normally the PEC presents an effective open circuit. Once the ground potential difference exceeds the breakdown voltage of the PEC, the circuit immediately closes and the ground potentials are equalized. The PEC is fully resettable and has a life of over ten thousand operations.

    Note that the use of separated grounding systems is not permitted by code in some regions and is generally NOT recommended. Where such systems are used, the PEC offers a mechanism to minimize equipment damage.

    Many buried pipelines are protected from corrosion by cathodic protection systems. To maintain the insulation integrity of the pipe at metering and telemetry stations, insulating joints are inserted into the pipe and those sections between insulating joints are grounded at the station. With long lengths of pipelines, induced voltages in the pipe caused by local lightning or power line faults activity can be in the order of tens of kilovolts. The result is that insulated joints failure is almost inevitable, with flange type insulated joints particularly susceptible.

    To protect against insulated joint break-down, the PEC can be connected directly across the joint. In its inactive state the PEC presents an effective open circuit across the joint.  Should the insulated joint voltage start to rise due to transients, the PEC will conduct and safely pass the transient current to ground, limiting the voltage stress across the joint. After conduction the PEC will automatically reset to its inactive state.
