 | Sulphur Rock It is a pale yellow brittle solid, non-conductor of heat and electricity. It is insoluble in water. It has 3 forms: Rhombic - it melts at 112.8C Monoclinic - it melts at 118.7C Crystalline Sulphur dissolves in carbon disulphide. It burns with a pale blue flame in air or oxygen forming sulphur dioxide mainly & a little sulphur tri-oxide. It is also known as Native Sulphur & is recovered from Sulphur bearing rocks which contain about 20% sulphur & other impurities like Clay, lime-stone, sand & gypsum. All these impurities are removed by 'liquation process' to get Rock sulphur in pure form (98-99.5%). Native Sulphur has versatile application in many industrial products like sulphuric acid, nitric acid, calcium bi-sulphite, carbon di sulphide, poly sulphide etc. which have many industrial uses. It is also used in medicine, dyes, leather purification, matches, gunpowder, insulator fire-works & Sugar purification. It is to be kept aloof from interfering chemicals to avoid hazardous effect. Water provision should be there to fight against self-ignition. Otherwise, it has unlimited shelf life.
