Petcryl-Polyglycolic Acid Sutures
Virtues:
1) Petcryl tensile strength surpass even the standards set by U.S. Pharmacopoeia and substantially higher than catgut as shown below:
| AVERAGE TENSILE STRENGTH IN KGS. |
| SUTURE SIZE IN USP | CATGUT | PETCRYL | INCREASE |
| 4-0 | 0.77 | 0.95 | +23% |
| 3-0 | 1.25 | 1.77 | +41% |
| 2-0 | 2.00 | 2.68 | +34% |
| 0 | 2.77 | 3.90 | +40% |
| 1 | 3.8 | 5.08 | +34% |
| 2 | 4.51 | 6.35 | +40% |
2) Petcryl retains its original tensile strength until the wound has achieved adequate stability. A comparison of "development of wound strength" visa-vis in vivo tensile strength of Petcryl establishes safety margin available during critical wound healing period. Petcryl retains its tensile strength of 75% on 14th day of implantation which makes it an ideal synthetic absorbable suture.
3) Petcryl is coated with non-toxic and bio-compatiable material called Polycaprolactone Calcium Stearate which facilitate smooth passage through tissues and firm knotting.
4) Petcryl is absorbed in the body by a simple hydrolytic mechanism which is predictable and reliable.
