Uses:

Root of Argyreia Nervosa is alternative and tonic; powdered root is given milk in synovitis and syphilis. Leaves are antiphlogistic and used in skin disease. Under-surface of the leaf is irritant and is used to hasten maturation and suppuration.

It sometimes acts as a vesicant. Upper surface is cooling and supposed to posses healing qualities. As an alternative and nervine tonic. Powdered root is soaked seven times during seven days in the juice of the tubers of asparagus racemosus and dried.

The roots, fruits and the leaves of Gmelina Arborea have great medicinal value. Externally, the paste of the leaves is applied on the forehead to alleviate the headache, especially in fever. To mitigate the burning sensation of the body, fresh juice of leaves is massaged, with great benefit.

Internally, the roots and fruits of gambhari are used in vast range of diseases. The fruits are recommended in raktapitta, excessive thirst, dysuria, sexual debility in males and habitual abortion. The roots alleviate flatulence, augment the appetite and are salutary in piles, being mild laxative. The cold infusion of candana, ustra, gambhari works well with sugar, to alleviate the thirst. Gambhari roots are helpful in ascites due to vata, as adjunct. The fruits are beneficial as anabolic in tuberculosis to hasten the healing ofcavitation in the lungs. Whereas, the roots alleviate the cough. As the fruit is cooling, it effectively pacifies the pitta dosa and rakta dhatu (blood). Hence, is the drug of choice for raktapitta.

The ripened fruit is valuable in heart diseases due to vata. The cold infusion of tea prepared from gambhari fruits is extremely beneficial, mixed with honey and wugar, in fever of pitta origin. Urdhvaga raktapitta, vomiting and burning sensation of the body. For hyperacidity, the gambhari leaves, apamarga roots and the bark-skin of salmali are mashed with cow's milk and are given orally.

In dysuria, the decoction of its roots is benevolent. The decoction of gambhari, sariva and guduci roots is an effective medicament for fever of vata type. The fruit alleviates the thirst and burning sensation in fever due to vitiated pitta dosa. The decoction of its roots skin alleviates the uterine oedema in the postpartum period and also augments the quantity of breast milk. The leaves juice, milk and sugar are recommended in inflammatory conditions of urinary bladder and dysuria. Gambhari is a well known bitter tonic and the fruits as general tonic in debility.

Uses:
The whole plant and its roots are used for medicinal purposes. The herb is useful both, internally as well as externally. Anti-dermatoses, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory properties of Sarapunkha are benevolent in cleansing and healing of the wounds and ulcers. In edema, skin disorders, glandular swellings like cervical adenitis and filariasis, the paste of its root is applied on the affected parts.

On traumatic wounds, the juice of its leaves works well. The root powder is salutary for brushing the teeth. It quickly relieves the dental pains and arrests bleeding. The seed-oil is applied externally in various skin diseases like scabies, eczema etc. In glandular swelling, the root mashed with rice water is used in the form of nasal drops along with its internal use. Internally, Sarapunkha is useful in vast range of diseases. It imparts a stimulant action on the liver, is an appetizer and digestant as well as cholegouge, hence, is rewarding in digestive disorders like anorexia, flatulence, abdominal pain, tumors, hemorrhoids, worms, liver and spleen disorders. In such conditions, the roots or ksara of sarapunkha is salubrious.

In piles, the roots work well, when given with buttermilk. The smoking of sarapunkha powder is recommended in cough and asthma, as it possesses mucolytic activity. The powder of whole plant is given with sugar and water in jaundice. Sarapunkha is one of the most common ingredients, in liver preparation, available in the market. In fevers due to vitiation of kapha and pitta doshas, it is valuable.

The pulp of its roots given with buttermilk reduces the enlarged liver and spleen very effectively. The decoction of its roots is given with marica powder, as an adjunct in diabetes. The roots are of great help in dysmenorrheal. Sarapunkha renders a diuretic action alongwith its anti-microbial activity, hence, is beneficial in dysurea and urinary infections. Ascites due to splenic pathogenesis responds well, when the root powder is given with buttermilk.
