Paraffin Wax, or in other relevant terms Macrocrystalline wax, is a petroleum wax made from deoiled slack wax, which is derived by dewaxing base distillate lube oil streams of predominantly straight chain alkanes. Paraffin wax is brittle and has a low melting point between 46 and 71 degrees Centigrade. Paraffin waxes impart high resistance to moisture. Due to their low cost, paraffins are frequently added to other wax blends. Paraffin wax is an important and a heavy compound with regard to its extensive use in various industries and in further chemical process of making other types of waxes. Having qualities like high resistance, brittle and a low melting point this petroleum wax has a high content of saturated hydrocarbons.

Unlike the common Paraffin Wax, the Micro crystalline waxes are tougher, more flexible and have higher tensile strengths and melting points. They are also more adhesive, and they bind solvents, oil, etc., and thus prevent the sweating-out of compositions. Typical oil content by weight is between 0.5% and 2%. These waxes are residual derivatives of slack waxes for which they are also termed as settling waxes. The chemical composition of these microcrystalline waxes comprise of saturated hydrocarbons, isoalkanes, naphthenes, and alkyl- and naphthenes-substituted aromatics. The physical properties of these waxes include: They are insoluble in water but attain a quick solvent property when tested with solvents such as chlorohydrocarbons, benzene, toluene, xylene, solvent naphtha, and turpentine oil. As these waxes have a high capacity to retain the solvents it is mixed with, thus resulting in a slow evaporation process, it helps in determining the quality standard of the product in which it is used. viz. petroleum jelly, shoe or floor polish etc.

A residue product from the refining process of specific type of napthenic crude oils. The same oil or different oils may be used for these purposes depending on the rubber compund. Serving as an internal lubricant in the rubber compound, it allows the use of higher molecular weight polymers, which have more desirable properties and still give a rubber compound that is acceptible for milling, mixing and extruding. These oils are also functionable for lowering the hardness of the cured rubber.
