No plastic carry bags will be seen in the city from July with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation imposing a complete ban on the use of plastic carry bags in the city.

A decision to this effect was taken on Monday by the Mayor, Ms B. Karthika Reddy, after detailed discussions with associations of retailers, hoteliers, kirana shops, sweet shops and others.

The shops and other commercial establishments will be given two months’ time to phase out plastic bags after which the total ban will come into force.

“Though there is an exemption for 40 micron plastic carry bags from the central government, we are going to implement the complete ban on plastic carry bags regardless of the microns. Citizens and commercial establishments may use jute and cotton carry bags,” the mayor said.

She said public awareness creating measures will be undertaken like putting up posters and banners, sending SMSes and showing slides in theatres about the consequences of plastic use.

She assured representatives of different commercial associations that GHMC will be discussing with plastic manufacturing units alternative material to replace plastic bags.

The ban is on the manufacture, storage, and usage of any kind of plastic carry bag.

Discarded plastic bags choke nalas and other water bodies, and create a pile up of garbage as they are not bio-degradable.The GHMC has a hard time cleaning nalas and other places where the bags accumulate.
