NEWSLA Galaxy announces record Herbalife renewal [19-MAR-12]
Herbalife has renewed its shirt sponsorship of Major League Soccer (MLS) champions Los Angeles Galaxy for another ten years. The US$44 million deal, described as the 'longest and largest in League history', will see the Herbalife logo remain on the LA Galaxy matchday shirt until 2022. Herbalife will also remain the official nutrition partner of the team, providing its products to players and staff, while a US$2.5 million donation will be made to the Los Angeles Galaxy Foundation and the Herbalife Family Foundation. This will include US$1 million in support of a new Children's Institute facility for underprivileged children in Watts, California. Tim Leiweke, the chief executive of LA Galaxy owners Anschutz Entertainment Group, said: "Herbalife bet on the Galaxy six years ago and now MLS has exploded in popularity and growth. For them to renew their partnership for this extended length is a tremendous mutual reward for both of us and a demonstration of their belief and faith in MLS. After becoming the nutrition partner of the LA Galaxy in 2005, Herbalife took over as shirt sponsor in 2007 - the same year former England captain David Beckham's arrival launched the club on to a global platform and made the shirt one of the biggest sellers in world soccer. LA Galaxy won its third MLS Cup and its first in six years in 2011, beating Houston Dynamo in the league final in front of its home supporters at the Home Depot Center. The team has recorded a win and a defeat in the opening two games of the 2012 season.
