The process of making paper by hand is very easy and the given stages are involved:

Preliminary Treatment: This step includes collection of basic raw material like straw, leaves, rags, or other fibrous materials and then ultimately breaking them to bits and pieces for treatment.

Beating: These bits and pieces are then beaten up with a heavy pestle in order to separate the fibers. Furthermore, the mixture is washed with water in order to remove the impurities. After the fibers are thoroughly cleaned, they are kept to prepare pulp or stock.

Sheet Formation: The most important tool for fabricating paper is the mould. The mould exists inside a wooden frame called deckle. The process goes further and the deckle is dipped with the mould into the vat where the fiber-water mixture also exists. The vat is then properly shaken in order to evenly distribute the pulp. Ultimately, the excess water is drained out and the individual fibers become capable of interlocking. The sheets thus gain lot of strength.

Pressing: In this process the wet sheets are lifted and transferred to a woolen felt with the help of mild pressing. Then, the wire pattern of the mould gets imprinted on the finished sheets and this leads to development of various patterns, textures and designs on the sheets.

Peeling and Drying: This is a very important process in which the sheets are dried to remove the extra moisture. This is specifically done by placing the sheets under the sun.

Sizing: This process involves treating handmade papers with glue and starch in order to prevent ink from blotting on it. Sizing is necessary to prevent absorption of inks and fluids on paper. This is also very important in offering the paper long life.
