Market Report 2 February 2009
TURMERIC: Turmeric prices remained stable with thin arrivals and limited offtake during the last week. The traders preferred to wait for the new arrivals to pick up. The new arrivals have started in Nizamabad and Erode but the same had been limited during the last week. The crop size of turmeric this year is expected to be at the same level as that of the last year coupled with low carry-over stock. Since the period of the coming couple of months is the demand period from domestic and international markets and with the bullish sentiments prevailing in the market due to lower total supply this year, the price of turmeric is expected to stay firm. CHILLIES: The chilli market is likely to rule firm on the back of less crop size this season. The commodity which witnessed damage due to untimely rainfall in the major producing regions of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh may see an overall decline of around 20-25 per cent in output. According to traders, Karnataka saw only 40 per cent of the last year’s crop where as Madhya Pradesh reported a decline in production at 1.8-2 million bags (each of 40 kg) against last year’s 2.8 million bags. Similarly, Andhra Pradesh could see production dipping by around 15 per cent. There is hardly any crop from Maharashtra and Karnataka. It is going to have its impact on chilli prices in Andhra Pradesh where the arrival will pick momentum soon. CUMIN: Cumin prices slipped a tad at the producing centres on poor demand. Domestic Cumin prices in the benchmark Unjha market witnessed subdued activity after starting firm with the reports of lower crop this year. Stockiest were seen offloading their old stock, which was the main reason for the weakness. A lot of old stock material has been disposed off during the last year. As a result the estimated carry forward stock of Cumin is placed at 400,000-450,000 bags. The yield for the new crop is also expected to be lower due to erratic climatic condition in the producing areas. FENNEL: Fennel market maintained its earlier firmness during the week with new arrivals of mere 500-600 bags. Emerging demand from the country, with initial reports of lower crop, pushed the prices up. Also, buying from the overseas counter for the old crop remained active, specially from Bangladesh and remained a supportive feature for prices to trade firm. Arrivals during the week for old crop remained at 1500-2000 bags against an offtake of 5000-6000 bags. As per the traders estimates the production of Fennel is expected to be 1 million bags against last year’s 1.2-1.3 million bags. Fennel prices in the days ahead are likely to trade firm on active buying amidst good demand.

Market Report 2 February 2009
PEPPER: Pepper market in the later part of the week witnessed bulls-liquidation resulting in the prices dropping a little. There was a bearish sentiment created based on assumptions that the domestic demand would not last for long while no demand was forthcoming from overseas markets, where the Indian parity was above other origins. The new crop arrivals at the primary market continued to remain thin indicating of a poor crop. Growers in Kerala indicate that their crop this year was down due to erratic rains and quick-wilt disease. However, Karnataka crop, which is to hit the market by March, is said to be good this year. CARDAMOM: Cardamom market was steady with good buying support. Indications are that the pipelines are empty as the dealers had been covering only what was required to meet their immediate requirements. There appears to be an equilibrium between supply and demand so far this year and as such there hasn’t been any significant drop in prices. Compared with last year the arrivals and sales continued to show an increase. Arrivals during the current season up to stood at 5,509 tonnes and the sales at 5,185 tonnes. The arrivals and sales in the same period last year were 3,204 tonnes and 2,996 tonnes respectively. The weather conditions during the recent past, in the growing areas are said to be unfavourable, because of the dry spell and wind which dries up the soil and that is not good for the cardamom plants. CORIANDER: Coriander prices by and large remained stable for the want of demand during the last week. The new arrivals have started at almost all the centres but at a slow pace. The pace shall increase soon as the initial reports suggests bumper crop of Coriander in India, which was not unexpected due to the historically high rates that prevailed all through out the last year. The traders were buying only for the immediate requirements and are waiting for the new arrivals to gain momentum. FENUGREEK: The market scenario in Fenugreek remained unchanged. The prices ruled steady with lackluster activities in the market. The market shall move sideways in the coming days.
