About Hologram

Hologram was invented by Physicist Denis Gabor in 1948.

  A Hologram is not made by printing or by some kind of ink as is commonly supposed but by the sophisticated technology of Laser Optics.

  A Hologram is a visual medium providing a high potential image in three dimensions (3 D) making it instantly recognizable to the naked eye and uniquely resistant to counterfeiting. Holograms, with their high-quality, high-definition optical image, are very effective in combating fraud.

  Apart from the three-dimensional Effect and the depth effect which are the basic features of the hologram, during the process of holographic recording (which is the same as the process of Master Origination) it is possible to create other effects such as The Animation Effect, The Dynamic Effect, The Kinetic Effect etc. and also to conceal code letters or numbers or secret images or incorporate Micro-Lettering in one of the layers of the Hologram. These are some of the typical optical security features incorporated in Holograms to make them impossible to replicate. Some of these features can be viewed only with the aid of special viewing instruments or under special lighting conditions.

  The lacquering on the film is done to impart an additional security feature, namely the property of “Tamper-Evidence”. If any one tries to remove a hologram, only the bare polyester film will come off in his fingers, leaving the impression/ image of the hologram on the surface on which it was originally affixed, thus revealing the evidence of tamper with the hologram.

  Being a three dimensional impression and virtually impossible to replicate, a security hologram is an inimitable symbol of genuineness and has extra-ordinary visual appeal when viewed under any type of natural or artificial light as it displays the different colours of the spectrum i.e. colours seen in a rainbow.

  In Today’s world every manufacturer and organization would obviously like to protect his or her brand or document against spoiling its spurious duplicates, imitations or look-alikes thus eating into its profit and brand name. This is where the security hologram comes in, providing that extra protection a brand or document.

  • Product Authentication and Brand Protection and Promotion. Holograms are affixed on Branded Products/ on the outer packaging of Branded Products to protect their “Genuineness” against spurious duplicates/ imitations/ look-alikes.

  • Document Authentication to protect the authenticity of the originals of important/ sensitive/ valuable documents against counterfeits/ fakes and forgeries.

    List of important/sensitive/valuable documents where a Hologram is used

    • Identity Cards, Passports, and Visas;

    • Drivers Licenses, Import and Export Licenses;

    • Currency Notes, Traveler's Cheques, Gift Cheques, Credit Cards;

    • Bonds and Share Certificates;

    • Bank Guarantees, Surety Bonds, Indemnity Bonds, Letters of Credit, Banker’s Cheques, Demand Drafts, Bank Certificates, Consignor’s and Consignee’s Copies of Consignment Notes;

    • Tax Stamps, Sales Tax Declaration Forms, Excise Labels, Ration Cards,;

    • Mark Sheets, Degree and Diploma Certificates, Books and Publications;

    • Analysis and test reports, Inspection Reports, Inspection Seals affixed on products passed after inspection.

Uniqueness of a Hologram

Uniqueness is inherent in the very process of Holographic Recording. If the same holographer but at two different point of time or if two different holographers but at the same point of time, were to carry out holographic recording from “ the positive” of each layer, minute examination will reveal subtle differences between the two versions of the same hologram created by them. Thus it is impossible to make an exact replica of the hologram and therefore it is regarded as virtually impossible to replicate.

 A Hologram is the “Interference Pattern” on the photosensitive coating on the surface of the glass plate created by the interaction of two beams of coherent light from a laser. Each time a holographic recording is undertaken, there will be subtle variations in the above referred “Interference Pattern”, making such pattern unique. Thus, uniqueness is inherent in the very process of holographic recording. It is not possible to make an exact replica of a hologram and hence it is regarded as virtually impossible to replicate.

 A special chemical coating known as Temper-Evident Coating on the Base Polyester Film imparts an additional security feature to the hologram, to detect any attempt at its unauthorized removal from the surface of a product or of its packaging or of a document.

Additional Security Features other than Holographic Features which can be incorporated in the Hologram

  • Colour of the foil: We can provide hologram in customized and different colours specially formulated by us. Multicolour foil can also be provided.

  • Inkjet Numbering: We can provide continuous inkjet alpha numbering or separate codes like year of manufacturing etc. on each and every hologram to ensure 100% accountability of each and every hologram.

  • UV Numbering: We can provide continuous UV alpha numbering or separate codes like year of manufacturing etc. on each and every hologram which will not be visible to the naked eyes and can be seen using an Ultra Violet Light.

  • White Code Marking: We can provide codes, numbers or signature of any person on the hologram which will remain permanently visible on the hologram. These codes or signatures can be changed without effecting the holographic design from time to time.

  • Laser etching: We can also provide laser etching on the holograms which is permanent impression on the hologram. The laser etched portion in the hologram adapts the colour of the substrate on which it is pasted. Laser etching can include codes, alphanumeric continuous numbering, year, signature etc.

  • Thermal Numbering: We can provide continuous thermal alpha numbering or separate codes like year of manufacturing etc. on each and every hologram to ensure 100% accountability of each and every hologram.

Manufacturing Process

Briefly discussed below is the process of making a typical two-layer “Embossing Reflection Hologram”, by far the most common and cost-effective hologram, with two common sub-types, namely the two layer hologram (with a background image and a foreground image) and the three layer hologram (with a background image, a middle ground image and a foreground image).

 Making the Artwork: Using computer graphics, the artwork is generated on the computer on the basis of a conceptual design, wherein certain parts of ‘the matter” which the customer would like to appear in his hologram are recorded in the background (the bottom layer) and certain other parts in the foreground (the top layer).

 Making the artwork “camera ready”: Using the computer graphics and keeping in view the shape and size chosen by the customer for his hologram, as many impressions of “the matter” of each layer as can be accommodated on an area of roughly six inches square, are separately recorded on paper.

 Image-Setting: Using the special cameras to make “the positive” and “the negative” of each layer from the camera-ready artwork.

Origination Techniques

Holograms  can be made using both Traditional (Analog) Holographic Technique and Digital Holographic Manufacturing Technique. Holostik offers both Traditional and Digital Holograms, details of which are given below:

2D/3D: These are by far the most common type of holograms. These holograms (and therefore the artwork of these holograms) may be of two layers (i.e. with a background and a foreground) or of three-layers (with a background, a middle ground and a foreground). The matter of the middle ground and the foreground in the case of three-layer holograms and the matter of the foreground in the case of the two-layer holograms are usually superimposed over the matter of the background of the hologram. These holograms display a unique multilevel , multi-colour effect. These images have one or two levels of flat graphics “floating” above or at the surface of the hologram. The matter in the background appears to be “under” or “behind” the hologram, giving the illusion of depth.

Apart from being the most cost-effective type of holograms, the 2D/3D Holograms, when viewed under a variety of sources of light, are extremely eye-catching.

Dot Matrix Technology: The hologram produced using Dot Matrix technology are considered to be one of the most secured hologram internationally. These holograms are originated using highly sophisticated and very expensive Dot Matrix System. This kind of technology allows creating or originals of holograms with a resolution of up to 10 microns. Dot Matrix technology makes it possible to create originals of computer synthesized holograms with high level of protection. The hologram includes elements that cannot be manufactured using other optical or printing technologies. this technique requires development of various algorithms for designing optical elements that shapes scattered radiation patterns.

E-Beam Technology: The hologram produced using electronic beam technology are considered to be the most secured hologram internationally. These holograms are originated using highly sophisticated and very expensive E-Bean Lithography system. This king of technology allows creating of originals of holograms with a resolution of up to 0.1 micron. Electron Bean technology makes it possible to crate originals of computer synthesized holograms with high level of protection. The hologram includes elements that cannot be manufactured using other optical or printing technologies. The technique requires development of various algorithms for designing optical elements that shapes scattered radiation patterns. This origination technique offers manifold possibilities for combining various security features. The technology of computer synthesis of holograms opens ample opportunities for the creation of OVD with highest level of security
