A barcode is an optical machine-readable representation of data, which shows certain data on certain products. Originally, barcodes represented data in the widths (lines) and the spacings of parallel lines, and may be referred to as linear or 1D (1 dimensional) barcodes or symbologies. These codes are printed with dark ink on a light background to create high and low reflectance which is converted to 1s and 0s. Today, barcodes are also printed in a pattern of dots, text codes and concentric circles hidden within images. Encrypted barcodes are decrypted using optical scanners called barcode readers or scanned from an image by special software. Barcodes are widely used to implement Auto ID Data Capture (AIDC) systems, which improves the speed and accuracy of computer data entered. Its widely used because its cost effective in comparison of passive RFID which costs about US$0.07 to US$0.30 per tag whereas installation of barcodes can be done in only US $0.005.

Barcodes were used first to label railroad cars, but they were not commercially successful until 1980 and then they were used to automate supermarket checkout systems, a task in which they have become almost universal. Going further, the first patent for a bar code type product (US Patent #2,612,994) was issued to inventors Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver on October 7, 1952.

It was due to the dedicated efforts of Raymond Alexander and Frank Stietz, two engineers with Sylvania (who were also granted a patent) that the implementation was done. They have contributed their work in the system to identify railroad cars. These codes from then were not used for commercial purpose until 1966.

Traditionally barcode encoding schemes were represented only by numbers, but these days newer symbologies add new characters such as uppercase letters or ASCII character set. An urge to encode more information in combination with the space requirements of simple barcodes led to the development of matrix codes (a type of 2D barcode), which consist bars rather than the grid of square cells. Stacked barcodes are a compromise between true 2D barcodes and linear codes (also known as 1D barcodes), and are framed by using traditional linear symbols and warping them in an envelope that allows multiple rows.
