About UsTent-making is an ancient Rajasthani skill, greatly favoured by Maharajas and Moghuls alike. Whole tented cities used to be erected for weddings and for durbars and splendid camps were set up for shikar and safari expeditions. His Highness, the Maharaja of Jodhpur always wanted to recreate the splendour of the Royal Camps from the times of the Maharajas. Whole cities of exotic tented structures used to be erected to entertain hundreds of wedding guests, offering the most luxurious of hospitality. There used to be Deseret Camps in the sand dunes of the Thar, Jungle Camps in the cool Hill Stations and grand Safari Expeditions to Africa. We set about creating a contemporary Royal Camp for the Pushkar Festival in November 1993. The tents were based on the old Shikar tents, which used to be used on Safari by the present Maharaja's grandfather. Great attention has been given to each and every detail in the design of the tents, furniture and accessories, as indeed to creating the entire ambience of the Royal Camp, to capture the luxurious nostalgia of a bygone age, combined with the utmost comfort and practicality for contemporary use. The actual making of tents is a traditional craft in Rajasthan, a skill which has been passed down through generations. Putting our tents into production is now also a means of stimulating and promoting many ancient skills and reviving the technical expertise from in and around the Jodhpur region. The Shikar tents are all made with water-resistant cotton canvas outerfly and with specially developed wood-block and screen prints, woven mosquito nets, furnishings and durries using a soft neutral palette of natural vegetable dyes. The furniture is made out of the local Shisham wood with a wax finish and natural canvas or durrie upholstery. Everything has been crafted by hand using all natural local materials. Our Royal Camps at Pushkar, Jodhpur and Nagaur all proved to be such a success that these have now become firm annual events and we also need to expand our original camp of 35 tents to 100 tents in order to meet the demand of our advance bookings. We are also developing custom made Camps in various exotic locations for private parties and celebrations. The interest in tents has been further flourishing with enquiries from private individuals and companies for special Designer Tents. We have been developing many different themes : Jungle Tents, Moghul Pavillions, Applique Dining and Reception Tents, Haveli Tented Bedrooms, various Canopies and Shamianas, Children's tents, Minature model tents, Banners, Flags and all sorts of Safari accessories. |
