| Palm PlantsChinese Evergreen![]() Botanical Name: Aglaonema Aglaonema is evergreen indoor plant which has been valued primarily for their durability. The name in Greek means “bright-thread”. They are related to both philodendron and spathiphyllum and their native habitats of rainforests and swamps help explain their hearty appetites for moisture and humidity. This doesn’t mean that they should live in a swamp indoors. They are popular house plants for offices and shopping malls because they are among the easiest houseplants to grow. They tolerate a wide range of light, as well as neglect, and are relatively resistant to pests.
Date Palm![]() Botanical Name: Phoenix dactylifera Date palm often reaches a size too massive for most residential landscapes but, fortunately, it is very slow-growing and will take a considerable amount of time to reach its 50 to 60-foot- height. Date Palm is most impressive with its single, upright, thick trunk topped with a crown of 8 to 15-foot-long, stiff leaves with extremely sharp spines at their bases. The stalks of inconspicuous flowers are replaced with clusters of one-inch-diameter, orange-yellow, date-like, ornamental fruits which ripen in early summer. The trunk can reach a diameter of four feet and is covered with an attractive, diamond-shaped pattern from old leaf scars. Date palm can be used at large parking lot islands; wide tree lawns, tree lawns, recommended for buffer strips around parking lots or for median strip plantings in the highway; specimen; sidewalk cutout (tree pit); residential street tree; tree has been successfully grown in urban areas where air pollution, poor drainage, compacted soil, and/or drought are common. Date Palm should be grown in full sun on fertile, moist soil for best growth but is tolerant of any well-drained soil. It can be planted on the inland side of coastal condominiums and large homes due to moderately high salt-tolerance. It does well as a street or avenue tree, even in confined soil spaces. Date Palm will require pruning to remove old fronds.
Dracaena Broad Leaf![]() Botanical Name: Dracaena Fragrans Massangeana
Foxtail Palm![]() The Foxtail palm tree is the most used landscape palm tree in the world. After being introduced to the Indian growers, the foxtail palm has gain unprecedented popularity, which has lead the foxtail palm to be widely commercially grown throughout the India. The Foxtail Palm Tree is native to Australia. The Foxtail palm has gain popularity because it is very durable and will tolerate a wide variety of soil conditions. This palm tree of medium stature, is also drought tolerant and very adaptable to many environments. The Foxtail Palm was so named because of its wonderful spiral leaves which appear as a fox’s tail. Usually with no more than seven to nine leaves to its canopy, the Foxtail Palm is a beautiful palm to have and cultivate. This palm tree will not only enhance the look of any commercial or residential area, but will also create a tropical feel to any environment.
Parlor Palm Neanthebella![]() Botanical Name: Chamaedorea elegans Parlor Palm is native to Mexico and Guatemala, and is one of the best used indoor palm after Areca. Tolerating crowded roots and low light levels is its USP. Since lower leaves drop from the plant as it grows, older palms have all their foliage on top of the bright green, shiny stem. It grows 5 to 8 feet tall but is usually kept smaller by pruning the stem back nearly to the ground. Growing very slowly, this pale green, single-stemmed palm is most effective when potted three or more to a container. It can also be an effective accent plant in a ground hugging ground cover in a small scale garden. While excellent when used for a house plant, Parlor Palm can also be used outdoors in a shady understory setting as an accent. The showy stems are bright green. Best growth occurs in shaded locations away from direct sunlight. No diseases are of major concern.
Queen Sago![]() Botanical Name: Cycas circinalis The palm-like Queen Sago has a short, dark brown, unbranching trunk topped with graceful, arching, medium green, feathery leaves, six to eight feet long. Although slow-growing, Queen Sago is much prized for its light-textured tropical effect and easy care and makes an excellent lawn specimen or container plant for large areas. It is usually located as a specimen where it can be viewed from all sides but could be mass planted on 8 to 19 foot centers on a large scale industrial or commercial landscape. Many people plant it too close to a building, window or walkway and, unfortunately, need to remove leaves to allow for clearance. When given sufficient room to spread, Queen Sago performs very well in shade or full sun and needs only occasional watering once established. It is too large for many small landscapes. King sago would be a good substitute in a small residential landscape.
Royal Palm Bottle Palm![]() Botanical Name: Roystonea spp, Hyophorbe lagenicaulis, Mascarena lagenicaulis Notably popular as street or specimen trees, Royal Palms make a neat, tidy, yet stately landscape element for large landscapes, often reaching 50 to 100 feet in height in almost as many years. The tall, smooth, cement grey trunks are capped with a glossy, green crown shaft several feet high and a beautiful, broad, dense crown of soft, gently drooping, feathery fronds. Flowers are incredibly fragrant, even from 50 feet away and are produced periodically throughout the year but mostly in summer. The old fronds should be removed before they drop since they can cause injury or damage to plants or property when allowed to fall. One frond will fall about every month. This palm can be used in large parking lot islands, wide tree lawns, medium-sized parking lot islands, medium-sized tree lawns; recommended for buffer strips around parking lots or for median strip plantings in the highway; narrow tree lawns; specimen; sidewalk cutout (tree pit); residential street tree. This palm is highly recommended for coastal area as due to its moderate salt tolerance and their ability of withstanding strong winds very well, but some foliage injury will be evident on Royal Palm located next to the ocean.
