Oil Water Separation Units
Oil Water Separation Units

In modern TPI Systems the separating surface area is increased vertically by adding a number of parallel plates mounted at an inclination. This not only affords a dramatic space saving but also facilitates very small separating diameter.

Features
  • Our oil water separation unit consists of plate pack constructed of closely spaced corrugated plates which are inclined at a 45° angle or more.
  • The waste water flows through these plated either parallel to the corrugations in "counter-current flow" or at right angles to the corrugations in "cross flow".
  • Under laminar flow conditions, the short distance between the inclined plates is now the only distance over which the pollutants have to rise or sink before they are intercepted and separated from the mother fluid.

Our separation systems are used in various industry applications like:
  • Mineral oil refineries, oil extraction, offshore platforms.
  • Tank storage farms.
  • Ballast water treatment.
  • Petrochemicals.
  • Galvanizing metal; mining industry.
  • Edible oil refining.
  • Foodstuffs industry.
  • Paper & pulp industry.

Design Guidelines
  • Depth to width ratio: A minimum depth to width ratio of 0.3 to 0.5 is specified so that separator does not increase droplet rise time to reach the water surface.
  • Length to width ratio: A minimum length to width ratio of 5:1 is specified for API separators to keep flow characteristics homogeneous, reducing short circuiting effects.
  • Maximum channel width and depth: The maximum API separator channel width is 20 ft; maximum depth is 8 ft.
  • Horizontal velocity: Maintaining a horizontal velocity of no more than 3.0 ft/sec to minimize turbulence and its interference with the separation process..
  • Oil droplet size: Most oil droplets in refinery wastewaters are 150 micron or larger. The API design standards were based on this droplet. Droplets smaller than 150 micron typically escape API separators and further treatment processes, unless allowances are made in the sizing of the API separator to remove these smaller particles.

Cross Flow Separators
Cross Flow Separators

Lamella settlers are basically cross flow plate separators designed for removal of settle able solids. The water containing solids flows in the horizontal direction between the closely spaced plates in the plate pack. Completely laminar flow conditions are established while the water flows across the plate packs from the inlet to outlet side. Solid with higher density than the carrier fluid will settle down into the sludge compartments of the separator, which is sloped compartments to facilitate removal of solid particles.

The number & size of the plates is governed by the water flow rate & settling velocity of the solids, which in turn are proportional to the diameter of the solids to be settled. The distance between the plates is depending upon the concentration of the solids sludge in the raw water. The plate distance can be varied, usually between 20-50 mm, to allow for the different sizes of the settling particles & to prevent clogging of the plate packs.

The systems are fabricated in the mild steel & other materials are available on request. All K-Pack separators are custom built with respect to the number of plates in the pack, the length of the plate distance between the plate and the plate incline. The incline of the plate is set between 45 and 60 degrees depending upon the general nature of the oil and/or the sludge.(density, velocity, concentration). The systems are fabricated in the mild steel, and other materials are available on the request. The oil separators are standard with oil and skimpy and 45 degree shaped compartment. The solid separators are optionally with a shiftless conveyor in the sludge compartment.

They are mostly used in industries like:
  • Mineral oil industry.
  • Edible oil industry.
  • Metal industry.
  • Ceramic industry.
  • Galvanic industry.
  • Mines.
  • Sand separation after washing of contaminated soil.
  • Food industry.

Plug Flow Reactors
Plug Flow Reactors

The pipe flocculator is a plug flow reactor in which processes such as oagulation, flocculation, demulsification, precipitation and pH control can take place under highly controlled and well defined conditions.

The above mentioned processes take place under turbulent flow conditions. At the chemical injection points the pipe diameter is adapted to ensure instantaneous mixing of chemicals and wastewater. Through the cross-section of a pipe the mixing intensity is virtually homogeneous. Reaction time is determined by the pipe length and flowrate and based on the exact requirements, no excess is required. In the plug flow reactor the process can be influenced at any time as opposed to tank reactors, where only one conditions per tank can be maintained.

The use of Pipe Flocculator in combination with a flotation system can give COD removals of upto 95%. K-Pack Systems has a wide experience in chemical treatment, particularly in the use and selection of coagulants and flocculants in combination with a PFR pipe flocculator.

The PFR pipe flocculator is exceptionally suitable for our latest developments in the non-toxic bio-degradable coagulants and flocculants range.

Pressure Sand Filters

Pressure sand filters has been used to polish secondary effluent or to produce effluent that is low in suspended solids. Filteration consists of passing waste water effluent through a filter medium that can strain out the colloidal particles. The filtering media may be fine sand, anthracite, mixed media, diatomaceous earth or filter fabric.

The solids accumulate in the filter media; therefore, backwashing using clean water in the opposite direction of flow must be accomplished periodically to control the head loss through filtration system.

Activated Carbon Filters
Activated Carbon Filters

Activated carbon filters are most widely used for industrial and domestic waste water treatment. They are used after sand filter to remove the unwanted tastes; odors and organic compounds from waste water. Activated carbon will also remove random gas, some pesticides and varying amounts of iron, lead, manganese, copper and mercury.
It will not only remove other dominants such as nitrate or fluoride, bacteria, and the heavy metals.

This system, called a water polisher, will clarify the water and remove the gases and other common contaminants that cause bad taste and odors.

Mechanical Bar Screens
Mechanical Bar Screens

The first unit operation encountered in any municipal sewage/ waste water treatment plant is screening. The bar screen is device with opening of uniform size that is used to retain coarse and fine solids found in waste water. These are also to protect pumps, valves pipelines and other appurtenances from damage or clogging by rags and large objects. According to the method used to clean the screen surface, these screens are designated as hand-cleaned or mechanically cleaned K-PACK offers both manual and mechanical bar screens for coarse and fine screening.

Hydraulic Clarifiers

Clarification is performed in rectangular or circular basins where the wastewater is held quiescent to permit particulate solids to settle out of suspension. To prevent-short circuiting and hydraulic disturbances in the basin, flow enters behind a baffle to dissipate inlet velocity. Overflow weirs, placed near the effluent channel, arranged to provide uniform effluent flow. Floating materials are prevented from discharge with liquid overflow by placing a baffle in front of weir. A mechanical skimmer collects and deposits the scum in a pit outside of the basin. Settle sludge is slowly moved toward a hopper in the tank bottom by a collector arm. Clarifier following activated sludge may be equipped with hydraulic pickup pipes for rapid sludge return.

Criteria for sizing settling basin are:
  • Over flow rate (surface settling rate)
  • Tank depth at the sidewall
  • Detention time

Surface settling rate is defined as the average daily overflow divided by the surface area of the tank, expressed in cubic meters per square meter per day. Area is calculated by using inside tank dimension, disregarding the central stilling well or inboard weir troughs.

Sequential Batch Reactors
Sequential Batch Reactors

SBR is an activated sludge wastewater treatment system for removing dissolved and suspended organic materials and nutrients. Due to this new technology industrial wastewater can now be treated biologically in ideal conditions, regardless of flow or load variations. Phosphorous and nitrates can be removed biologically as well.

SBR Operation Philosophy

Sequencing Batch Reactor actually represent a very elementary form of treatment process known as "Fill and Draw". Wastewater added to a reactor is treated to remove undesirable component, and is subsequently discharged. The SBR reactor is a self-contained system incorporating equalization, aeration and clarification, within the confines of a Single basin.
The SBR uses the latest biomass conditioning technology. This enable the SBR system to attain nutrient control without the addition of chemical and to out perform continuous "flow through systems".

Operation

Normally the process follows the basic steps of AERATE, SETTLE and DECANT. The actual cycle time will vary with the sewage results desired. If only BOD reduction is desired, a cycle time as 3 hours may be used. If further treatment, to obtain nitrification/ denitrification if required, the cycle time can be extended to accommodate the process requirements.

The AERATE phase in the SBR system is typically time/level controlled and can be adjusted depending on the required removal efficiency. The AERATE phase is followed by the SETTLING PHASE. The settling represents the quiescent phase during which no aeration or mixing occurs and is also time/level controlled. The last step is the DECANT step representing the discharge of clarified sewage controlled by level in the reactor.

  • Aeration Phase: Depending on capacity (max 4hrs).
  • Settling Phase: Normally 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Decant Phase: Within 30 min, reduction from maximum to minimum.
