Phad Paintings And The History
Phad Painting is also known as Tanjavur painting and is a form that developed in the southern part of India. The style emerged during the reign of the Chola kings, who provided the necessary patronage for the art to flourish. Originally the paintings depicted Hindu gods, Krishna in particular, but went on to imbibe designs from all over the world. Some of the other popular Hindu gods and goddesses to be depicted included Shiva, Vishnu, Lakshmi, Parvathi, and Ganesh. The technique utilizes pure gold leaf along with precious and semi-precious stones. It is the raw material that enhances the value of these paintings. Initially there were 5 basic styles of Tanjore paintings. These included:
- The Vijayanagar style of murals
- Court painting or portraiture
- Traditional wood sculpture
- Indigenous or folk painting
- Gold impasto paintings
Today, of course, there have been a plethora of changes that have included changes in style, use of colours and material. Phad paintings have grown to become more liberal and creative.

Steps Involved In The Creation Of Phad Painting
The art of phad painting is intricate and has a number of steps involved in the proper execution. Some of the major steps are mentioned below:
- First, the board on which the painting is going to be made is prepared
- The next step is the proper sketching of the design or print
- The stones are fixed on the drawn design with utmost care
- The area around the stone work is then filled with a mixture of gum and chalk powder
- All the inlay and relief work around the stone setting is filled in a neat manner with a thicker mixture
- The next step is the cleaning of all the areas that have been filled
- The gold foil is applied over the stones and relief works
- The gold foil is then cut to expose the stone work beneath
- After this, follows the intricate painting of the figures and background of the painting
- The painting is finally checked for flaws. If any flaws are detected, these are rectified immediately.
- Once the flawlessness of the painting has been determined, the frame and glass is fixed with care and precision
