Carpets & Namdas
Unlike the legendary Aladdin's Carpet, the carpets from Kashmir do not soar
high in the air but they definitely take the beholder to an era bygone.
Handcrafted carpets are truly a pride of an Indian home and are increasingly
becoming popular worldwide. Though carpet weaving arrived in India with the
Mughals, the craft flourished and evolved in Kashmir and today, Kashmir has
become the hub for high quality Traditional Indian Carpets & Rugs. The
designs have been inspired by the Persian style but they beautifully display
an exclusive Indian charm.
The carpets from Kashmir are known for the intricate and delicate handwork
done on them. Besides, they are world famous for two things - firstly, they
are hand made and secondly, they are always knotted, never tufted. The
knotting of the carpet is one of the most important aspects that determine
its durability and value, in addition to its design. The more knots per
square inch, the greater its value and durability. The colours of Kashmiri
carpets are subtler than muted; the yarn (either: silk, wool or a
combination of both) is dyed using vegetable colors.
Various types of carpets-
- Handknotted Woollen Carpets

of knots per square inch and exquisite design sense have made Indian

apart from the fact that they spread warmth.

texture. The tufted woolen carpets are made using special needles
called the tufting guns. They may be hand tufted or machine tufted.

NAMDAS - an inexpensive
item of décor from Kashmir
The ancient art of felting wool into namdas came from Yarkand. Namdas are a
kind of mattress, originally from the state of Jammu and Kashmir. These are
made by felting the wool rather than weaving it. Low quality wool mixed with
a small quantity of cotton is used to manufacture namdas. Chain stitch
embroidery in woolen and cotton thread is worked on these rugs.
Types of namdas
Namdas are usually of two types, plain and embroidered. Formerly, woolen
yarn was used for embroidery, but now acrylic yarn (cashmelon) is in use.
Namdas and gabbas are embroidered with thread, which gives color, beauty and
strength to them. This cottage industry is concentrated in Anantnag,
Rainawari and Baramula regions of Kashmir.
Factors determining the pricing of
namdas
Prices of Namdas depend upon their quality of wool, pattern (plain or
embroidery), size of the product and the neatness in designs. Far less
expensive are these colorful floor coverings made from woolen and cotton
fiber, which has been manually pressed into shape. Prices vary with the
percentage of wool- a Namda containing 80% wool being more expensive than
one containing 20% wool.
Namdas are available is a wide spectrum of designs and colours at
unbelievable prices. Place an order or request for more details, our
customer care personnel shall respond to your queries, promptly.
