Actuators![]() Function The brake cylinder presses the brake pads against the brake surface, slowing the vehicle or bringing it to a halt. Application Knorr-Bremse's modular approach to brake cylinder design for buses, trucks and trailers means it can offer solutions for virtually every type of situation, size, performance and cylinder design. The modular approach means we have drastically reduced the number of individual components, slashing customers' spare part and maintenance costs. Disc Brakes![]() Function A disc brake slows a vehicle by applying the force generated by the brake cylinder to the brake disc. Knorr-Bremse has set new standards with its pneumatic disc brake for commercial vehicles with gross weights of 6 t to 44 t or more. The advantages over conventional systems are: reduced weight, compact design, even pad wear, ease of servicing, reduced cost and enhanced safety. Application Knorr-Bremse's position as the leading supplier of disc brakes and complete braking systems for commercial vehicles has been further consolidated by further technological developments such as monoblock brake calipers, splined discs with intermediate elements and split discs for easier disc replacement. Electronic System![]() The requirements made of modern braking systems in terms of initial response time and brake control cannot be fulfilled using traditional control systems. We have set new standards in brake and chassis management with the further development and optimization of our electronic systems. Our extensive product programme ranges from the statutory anti-block system (ABS) to the latest electronic braking system (EBS) and the state-of-the-art adaptive cruise control system (ACC). ABS: Function ABS (Anti-Lock System) prevents the wheels from locking during braking, whereas ASR (traction control) ensure that none of the wheels on the driven axle spin during acceleration. ASR thus acts like a limited-slip differential, ensuring optimum traction whatever the state of the road surface. Application Having pioneered the development of ABS systems for commercial vehicles, it goes without saying that Knorr-Bremse offers ABS and ASR systems for all vehicle types and their trailers EBS: Function EBS (Electronic Braking System) integrates into a single system the basic brake control, ABS and ASR functions of a vehicle. The advantages of electronic control over a conventional pneumatic system are reduced initial response time and shorter braking distance - meaning enhanced safety on the road. The EBS system also offers integrated Coupling Force Control (CFC), which modifies braking force distribution and harmonizes braking between towing vehicle and trailer. Application Knorr-Bremse has developed sophisticated electronic EBS and CFC systems for all vehicle types and trailers. ESP: Function Extension of EBS to include ESP (Electronic Stability Program) helps automatically stabilize the vehicle in critical situations and considerably reduces the danger of rollover. For the first time ever, the direction and speed of the entire truck-trailer combination are automatically adjusted without any action on the part of the driver. ESP selectively applies individual brakes and intervenes in the engine management system, automatically assisting the driver in critical situations. Application In developing ESP, Knorr-Bremse has exploited the full scope offered by electronic systems. It represents an important contribution to greater road safety. ELC: Function Electronic Leveling Control (ELC) offers electronic level regulation and adjustment and also an axle-lifting function for vehicles with pneumatic suspension. Application This development can be used, for example, to lower the level of buses to enable children, elderly and handicapped persons to get in and out more easily. ACC: Function To ease the task of the driver in heavy traffic, Knorr-Bremse has developed an Adaptive Cruise Control system (ACC) that automatically maintains the right distance from the vehicle in front, depending on the speed at which it is travelling. Application Adaptive Cruise Control can help prevent rear-end collisions and ensure more effective use of road capacity. |
