Air Supply System

Air Supply System
The air supply system includes compressors to generate the compressed air, and dryers, oil separators and condensate collectors to condition it. The end product is a specific volume of compressed air in the required quality.

Compressed air is an important source of energy for certain basic functions in a train. In addition to operating the brakes, it is required for opening doors, controlling the suspension, operating the sanding equipment - and also raising the pantograph or driving the windscreen wipers.

Air Supply System consists of following equipments:

Sanding systems:
Sanding systems are used in rail vehicles to improve friction between the wheel and the track. They can be operated automatically or by the driver to assist drive-off and braking.

In the case of emergency braking, the sanding system is triggered automatically. The sand is contained in a box and is distributed by compressed air between the wheel and the track. Knorr-Bremse supplies all the components for sanding systems:

Brake testing:
All rail authorities require a brake test to be carried out once a trainset has been put together. This includes a final, simplified test in conjunction with the locomotive. Another possibility is to use static testing equipment to test the trainset before it goes into service. This saves time and money and considerably increases the efficiency of modern make-up and marshalling yards.

The bogie equipment is the part of the overall system that actually generates the braking force. Brake Control System

Brake Control System
The brake control system plays a crucial role in bringing a train to a safe halt, whatever the operating situation.

Optimum braking is achieved if operation of a single lever by the driver results in an individual braking force being applied to each axle or bogie of the train. As the driver himself is not in a position to apply the brakes with a specific force to each axle or bogie, modern brake control systems need to have a large number of integrated "intelligent" functions:

  • load-specific braking of loaded or empty cars
  • anti-lock system (wheel slide control)
  • driver alertness monitoring (SiFa)
  • remote-controlled emergency braking (LZB, PenaltyBrake)
  • passenger-operated emergency brake systems
  • anti-wheel-skid systems
Irrespective of whether the train has a mechanical brake, electromagnetic track brake, eddy-current brake or reverse drive generator brake, the brake control system ensures optimum co-ordination of the various systems.

Modular Brake Control System

Modular Brake Control System
The Modular Brake Control System represents a further development and adaptation for the European market of the CCB II braking system that has already been so successful in the USA. Like the CCB II, the MBS system can be easily adapted to a wide range of different vehicles.

Its modular design makes for rapid and easy replacement of defective units. And an automatic self-diagnosis system helps avoid unnecessary maintenance work - reducing the amount of time MBS-equipped locomotives are out of service.

Each individual MBS module is equipped with its own computer that is linked to the others via a bus system. This makes it possible to limit the impact of localized faults and keep the overall system running longer. MBS also comes with a newly developed emergency brake control system that remains fully functional in pneumatic-only mode as well as electrical-only mode.
