About Us

Kalpana chawla center for space and nano sciences, (KCCSNS) Kolkata is a non-profit academic organization registered under the west Bengal societies registration act in the year 2004. The explosion in research and application in the field of space, nano science and technology in this century in the world in general and Asia in particular will generate opportunities for buding scientific talents. Unfortunately the universities in eastern and north eastern India failed to look into this aspect seriously. A large number of students still opt for careers in basic science and technology this region. If they do not get employment or opportunities, it is normal that they will be forced to opt for other avenues and sectors. On the other hand if we can provide opportunities which will allow them to survive and sustain their interest then quite a number of excellent and good students could be retained in the science and technology sector. This center was conceived by scientists and faculty members from different universities, colleges and research institutions under the leadership of Dr. Santanu data. The aim of this center is to develop into a full fledged training human resource training institute, catering to the needs of the research organizations and industry of the space, nano and related sciences and technology in the country. It also intends to have an in-house research and development capability. KCCSNS realises that space science and technology is multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary in nature. It has its own intellectual charm and challenges. Atmospheric science, remote sensing, GIS , fluid dynamics, astronautics, rocketry, robotics, and new fields of microgravity, space biology, nano science technology applications to improvise materials in the above fields and space policies presents a beautiful bouquet to seduce young talents. The center regularly holds seminars on space related topics and has conducted a large number of focused workshop on fluid dynamics, astrophysics, vacuum and cryogenics etc. In august 2009, a 7 day national workshop on Observational astronomy Was conducted jointly with physics and mathematics unit (p. A. M. U. ) of Indian statistical institute, Kolkata. Resource persons were scientists from IUCAA, TIFR, raman research institute, aries Nainital. Prof P. C. Agrawal of TIFR was the advisor for this program. Apart from this the centre successfully conducted four, 2 week ISRO sponsored national summer workshop on foundations of space science and technology. These workshops are organized each year in may/June jointly with ramakrishna mission vivekananda university, Belur, Howrah, w. Bengal. Senior faculty members of kccsns gives the foundation level lectures followed by specialized lectures from experts. Experts are normally from different ISRO centers e. G. Istrac (bangalore), vssc (trivandrum), lpsc (trivandrum) etc. B. Sc, m. Sc and research students from various academic centres all over the country with a bulk coming from kolkata attend these workshops. Specialised lectures on microgravity, space biology, space psychology are also included in these course works.
