A gear box is a hydraulic system meant for transmitting mechanical power from a prime mover (an engine or electric motor) into some form of useful output of lower RPM and higher torque. It is a set of gears for channelizing power from one rotating shaft to another. Gear boxes are widely used for many equipments & products, like machine tools, automobiles, heavy cranes, earth-moving machinery, etc. Their size, geometry, loading condition and performance requirement, etc. vary according to specific industry criteria. The manufacturing industries are showing considerable growth; the automobile sector is poised for a much higher rate of growth. It is, thus, felt that the demand for gear boxes in these industries will increase rapidly in the years to come.
