in recent years, durability of concrete structures have become the cause of concern to all concrete technologists and has led to the need to coding of related requirements. In light of this significant changes have been incorporated in the latest is:456:2000, to introduce in-built protection from facts affecting durability of concrete structure. It is observed that more emphasize is given on followings :-
(a) grade of concrete.
(b) mix design.
(c) water-cement ratio.
(d) cover to the reinforcement.
(e) crack width.
it is now recommended by bureau of indian standards (bis) to follow the norms mentioned hereunder, during execution to impart the required degree of protection to the concrete structure .

1pile cover
they are used for side application to rings in pile foundation. They are provided without cut for easy loading.
size :- 55mm, 75mm.
usage :- 8 nos / rmt.
2 beam side
they are used for side application to stirrup reinforcement in beam directly. These covers are designed for easy placement & positioning of beam and provide stability.
size :- 25mm, 30mm, 40mm.
usage :- 4 nos / rmt.
3 slab cover
they are used for bottom application to main reinforcement in slabs providing cover to main reinforcement. They are designed for easy loading and full proof locking of reinforcement.
4 beam bottom

they are used for bottom application to main reinforcement in beam directly. These covers are as such to provide stability to the beam.
size :- 15mm, 20mm, 25mm, 30mm, 40mm, 45mm, 50mm, 55mm, 75mm.
usage :- 4 nos / 1 rmt.
5. Columns cover
they are used for side application to reinforcement in columns and walls. These covers are designed for easy loading and full proof locking.
