Background

Precise actual position values are needed to monitor movements for all positioning tasks in plant and mechanical engineering. Because they can assign a precise and unambiguous position value to every linear or angular position at any time, absolute rotary encoders have become one of the most important elements linking mechanical and control systems

Measuring Principle

Incremental encoders can only determine positions in relation to a reference position. In the case of absolute rotary encoders, on the other hand, the position is encoded on a non-volatile grating. In this way, the position is available as a binary value as soon as the system is switched on, making down movements unnecessary. The advantages over contact less optoelectronic sensing and consistent digital detection and processing of measured values.
